Connect vacuum gauge to test. Also, use 6 feet of hose one end in ear and other poking around under hood to listen for leaking vacuum.

Mercury sable problems

You just need to check ALL the vacuum lines my friend. It sounds like a vacuum leak somewhere and needs addressed. There may be one off or some that are cracked, but the need attention. Run that thing till it drops Brother, that's what I always do. Then I build something else with the good stuff that's left.

Car is shuttering while stopped in drive or reverse

It could be most anything as a violent hit to the frame will jar things loose, the older the vehicle the easier this will happen. Look under the hood for loose vacuum lines. Look under the vehicle for loose or unconnected connectors, wires, and vacuum lines. Good luck!

Stalls in reverse but not in drive. Why?

There are a few switches that are different in the gear selection. One is the automatic parking brake release. It is vacuum controlled and on some models, you shift and the vacuum body routes vacuum to a dashpot to release the Emergency brake. If something is wrong there you will get a vacuum leak and it can kill the engine.

The other group of problems concerns the Pollution system. On some models you have to be in drive to even test the controls. Some cars use a idle stepup similar to A/C stepups. You adjust the RPM to compensate for the drag of pollution parts.

You can get a free scan at Autozone or Oreillys and this may help you.
