Question about 1990 GMC Sierra

2 Answers

We got a lot of snow and I was trying to clear my windshield. Turned on the wipers and one wiper stopped. The other still works. I have a feeling I know what is wrong, but I just need to know if I can get to the wiper arms underneath the cowl or do I have to go behind the dash.

You can get to them from under thev cowl. Just look at the cowl and you will see the screws that hold it in place. Just remove them and lift the cowl and the linkage you want to get to will be exposed.

My windshields wipers wont work

If that happens, your windshield wipers will not work at all and you won't be able to clear any water, dirt, or snow that ends up on your windshield. Replace the windshield wiper motor right away. The windshield wiper fuse is burnt out. When the windshield wiper motor is overloaded, the fuse burns out.23 Nov 2015

I turned on the wipers while windshield was iced and they did not work due to ice.

From your description of events, chances are, your wiper motor burned out, or the gears stripped, either way you're most likely looking at a new wiper motor. Blades frozen to the windshield, or trying to clear deep or heavy snow with wipers put a lot of strain on the motor and will very often cause it to burn out. The upside is if you are confident enough to try it yourself, most wiper motors are relatively easy to replace, and depending on your vehicle, it shouldn't be a horribly expensive part to purchase. Hope this helps, Good Luck :)

Windshield wipers stopped working with heavy snow cover

The windshield wiper circuit has an circuit breaker in it, under heavy load this breaker trips to protect the wiper motor, when the motor cools, the breaker resets automatically restoring proper wiper action.

Does the wiper motor run? If you can hear the wiper motor run, the wipers arms may have disconnected from the wiper motor, you will have to remove the wiper arms, and the plastic cover to access the wiper motor, and check for damaged parts. If your wiper motor does nothing at all, you probably blew a fuse do to the resistance on the arms, refer to your owners guide for fuse panel, and fuse locations. hope this helps

see if the transmission arms for the wiper motor are moving when the wiper motor is on. The bolts that hold the arms to the motor may be loose or stripped out from the heavy know. The threads for these bolts are thin and don't take much to strip.

My windshield wipers stopped working after a big snow storm. (1997 Jeep Cherokee)

You should check your fuses first. What may of happened is that the wiper motor could be frozen if the wiper arms are frozen in ice. Another thing that may of happened is that the wipers were used to clear the windshield instead of clearing it manually. When that is done if there is too much snow or it is a heavy snow the wiper motor will burn up or go bad due to the fact that it does not have enough power to do such things.

there is a clip under the blade where  the arm that goes through the wiper blade is a tab that you need to press toward the arm until it releases
look for a tab.
