That means you have an oil leak, the bad news is that the subaru is known for leaking head gaskets,it may be valve cover gaskets as well, you will have to jack up the car and take a look heres a diagram to help you locate the head gasket and valve cover gasket.there a gasket on each side of the engine.hope this helps.2002 Legacy 2.5 Oil smell at idel? - e277eb5.gif

above picture incorrectly labeled @ valve cover gasket.. that is actually the "girdle" cam cap which gets silicone then on outside of it is valve cover gasket.

Burning rubber smell from Subaru Legacy

Please have your exaust pipes checked, perhaps a mount is burning. The catalytic converter can make a nasty odor when it is clogged. Check the wear on the serpintine belt.

I have a 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback, and my AC is weak.

my suggestion would be to go to another shop, most likely the freon is low, pressure should be measured on the high side and low side, a fully charged system should read 125 to 135 high 25-30 low and these pressure will either rise or fall with ambient temp and humidity but not drastically, you also may have an engine oil leak causing that smell,it may also be possible that the a/c belt is slipping,if the freon 134a is leaking the repair shop may install a leak dye in the system to aid in tracking small leaks this is a good investment good luck

Problem with heater core in a 2001 Subaru Legacy

If you smell antifreeze then the core may be leaking. Burning oil may be rocker covers leaking on the exhaust and the odor being drawn in by the fan. In any case replacing the clutch wouldn't necessarily cause the problem.
