Question about 1997 Cadillac DeVille
Overheating can be numerous things: Fans not working, water pump, thermostat, overflow cap, and the list keeps going. When the engine is running and heats ups, feel the heat of the top hose, if the hose isn't hot, the thermostat is most likely stuck open and needs replaced. If it is hot we know you have circulation. The cap on the expansion tank may be defective, if it can't hold the pressure of the water, it will release at the overflow cap if the cap is bad. Also check the coolant level.

There can be many things that could cause it to overheat. bad thermostat, low antifreeze, bad water pump, incorrect timing, blown head gasket, clogged radiator, collapsed radiator hose, broken fan. You could also have a defective gauge showing you are overheating when everything is ok.

HELLO, OK WE MIGHT HAVE A WATERPUMP ISSUE.FIRS THE WATER PUMP ON THE 4.6 NORTHSTAR IS ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE MOTOR AS VIEWED FROM THE FRONT.IT IS DRIVEN BY A SMALL BELT ON THE REAR OF THE MOTOR AND IS SLIGHTLY VISABLE UNDER THE METAL SHIELD REMEMBER THE DRIVERS SIDE IS TRULY THE REAR OF THE MOTOR.IF THE BELT IS GONE THE WATERPUP,BELT,BELT TENSIONER AND POSSIBLY THE DRIVE PULLY WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED.* THE THERMOSAT IS ANOTHER POSIBILITY IF THE W PUMP IS OK.FINALLY THE HEAD GASKETS ARE ALSO AN ISSUE IN THAT YEAR HOW EVER YOU WOULD HAVE OTHER ISSUES (NO HEAT) GOOD LUCK RAY

check for air in system(cooling system) also check to see if cooling fans on radiator come on when car reaches about 225-230degrees, if not check relays and fans to see if they ar good if so see if both of them work (they should) if they both come on see if they go off if they dont ever go off then the engine is not cooling down have a tech. check it out ,could be a blown head gasket or worse

Check for coolant flow at the Purge line, this is a common problem on the Northstar.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank, this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.
