Make sure that the car is in park (or neutral on manual transmitions) with the emergency brake on. Use a temporary starter switch that you can buy at an auto parts store. Connect one end to the small post on the starter. Connect the other to the battery + (positive) terminal. Tap the starter switch and see if the engine will turn over. If the starter does not turn over it's the starter. If it does turn over, connect a test light to the small starter terminal wire and ground the other end to the chassis or - (negative) terminal on the battery. Turn the ignition switch to the start position and see if the light turns on. (you will have to hold the clutch pedal down on a manual transmition car) On a car with an automatic transmition, If the light does not turn on you have narrowed it down to the saftey switch on the gear selector or the ignition switch. On a manual transmition car you have narrowed it down to the saftey switch on the clutch pedal or the ignition switch. Both of the saftey switches can be jumped (temporarily for diagnostics) with a small piece of wire (stripped back about 1/2 inch on both ends) inserted into the terminal connector. Locate the appropriate switch for manual or automatic transmitions and disconnect the switch at the connector and insert the wire into the connector to bypass the saftey switch and turn the ignition switch to the start position. If the light turns on there was a problem with the saftey switch, if not then it is the ignition switch.

2000 honda civic wont start

No start problem. This is many a times caused by weak battery or faulty battery, or can be possible that battery to starter connection is loose or faulty starter itself.First the battery to start and both battery and starter voltage needs to be checked and confirmed. If that is checked ok, then other possibilities like faulty spark plugs,m faulty fuel pump etc etc needs to be checked. Where do I spray the starter fluidin a 96 dodge caravan

The starter fluid needs to be sprayed on the throttle body. This is done for testing the car with starter fluid. If it runs by spraying starter fluid, then most probably the fuel pump is the problem.
If you notice no start problem on your car/.Then there are many other possibilities too. Car won't srart, have lights won't turn over

Just because you have lights it doesnt mean the battery is strong enough to turn it over...first check battery with voltmeter....if it doesnt say 12.02 volts at least you need a battery....12.06 is perfect.
If it is good check fuses...most cars have a start fuse that can blow.and also a start relay..If they are all good and your dash instruments lights come on when you turn ignition on... the ignition should be good...It is rare for the ignition to be bad if lights on instrument panel come on when ignition is turned on but be sure to keep headlights off ! ....If all this seems to be good you need a starter.sometimes the S wire that connects to the starter solenoid...(smallest wire) will come loose and cause problem that seems like bad starter but will be a loose wire instead.....make sure all wires are tight before you buy a starter....ALSO YOU COULD HAVE MORE THAN ONE PROBLEM
BE SURE TO CHECK EVERYTHING EVEN IF YOU FIND ONE BAD AT THE BEGINING OF YOUR TROUBLESHOOT PROCEDURE...CHECK EVERYTHING I MENTIONED.
