The bulb is most likely burned out. there are a few types of license plate lights out there. some where you have to replace the whoel unit and some that have replaceable bulbs. both you can find at your local parts store.

The first thing to look for is a blown fuse. Have a look at the Owners manual to locate the fuse box, usually it has a diagram to tell you which system uses which fuse. For a license plate light it normally shares a fuse with the front parking lights...are they working normally?
Have a look at the fuse box first....and the bulb! : )

SOURCE: License plate lights do not work.

The licence plate lights are in the same line as your tail light wiring assembly. I assume your tail lights are working or you would have got a ticket for that. The wire is either cut, broken or unhooked from the tail light wires (which usually are brown). If you can not find the problem, you can always run a new wire to the tail light wire from your licence plate wire. Then they should work.
Your other problem is that the license plate ground is rusty & not grounding, which would also not let them work, so you should probably check that first. Rick

License Plate light dont work

Hi Merido, If the fuse is blowing in the center try using a fuse with a higher rating. If the fuse is blowing towards the side, you have a short circuit. If the rear lights are working correctly the problem will be between the tail lamp wiring and the number plate. look for anywhere on the harness which may be rubbing against the body of the car. It should not be too dificult to find the fault and rectify it. Regards John

You shouldn't need the license plate lights to work to make your trailer lights work. Chances are that there is an issue with the wiring it's self. On my father 94 pick up the wiring is spliced directly in the taillight wiring. If your taillights work there shouldn't be an issue with the trailer lights. Start by checking or remounting the ground wire attached to the wiring harness. If that isn't the issue test the input of the harness followed by the output. If there is input but no output you need to replace the harness. Try the CURT 55379 you can purchase this by visiting one of their retailers by clicking here.

My park avenue has star bit screws on both sides of the plate lights right at the top of the license plate holder. I just chaged them last week. I do not know what size the bit was and I am not sure your car is the same. My car looks just like the car in the picture just longer and a little bigger.

Try link below, may point you in right direction, but you'll have to scroll down & find what you need. Otherwise I'd start from bumper with test light & work my way back toward front harness, after all fuses, plugs etc been checked.
