Question about 1999 Volkswagen Passat

V reg volkswagen passat, heater blows cold air. Temperature gauge fine, undone pipes and flushed out system, liquid was brown and rusty, warmed a little after this but still cold. All pipes leading into system are correctly hot.

As it was rusty i would assume the poor thermostat has been abused, it's in the waterpump and a few minutes to change.They are £6+ from main dealer.If in the open position(wax has no life left to open or close and spring keeps it open) this is why all seems fine but no heat.With the thermostat in the open position(faulty) your car will use more fuel and wear and tear on the engine particulary at cold starts will increase so change it sooner rather than later.

Heater blowing cold air


If all the controls are set properly, I'd look for a faulty thermostat as the first choice before looking at more costly fixes.

FIRST, I'd check the engine thermostat to be sure it's closing and allowing the coolant to heat up to a proper temperature. What's the temperature of your engine after five or ten minutes of running? Still showing cold on the gauge? If so, your problem may be as simple as a bad thermostat which can be replaced easily and relatively cheaply. If the thermostat stays open in cold weather, the engine won't heat the coolant properly and you won''t get warm air, plus your engine will lose efficiency and fuel mileage.

If that's not the problem, I'd check the connections where the hoses go to the heater core to be sure they are delivering hot coolant. Then the controls to assure they are opening the heater valve. Also, you could have a plugged heater core. How does the coolant look? Normally it's good for 100K miles but if it looks dirty or really rusty, then you may have a problem. The coolant is a light reddish brown but should not be dark brown. The radiator and heater core may need a profesional flushing. Good luck!

'89 Maxima car heater stops blowing warm/hot air


You will have an 'in' and an 'out' hose going to the heater core. Run engine until hot, these two pipe should be both quite hot, if the out pipe feels cooler than the in pipe then it would seem the core is blocked. You say you have no leaks so maybe it would be worth removing both heater pipes, fix one side up to the water main and gently pass water through it. Hopefully lots of Brown sludge should come out.
If both pipes feel hot then the core should be ok. This means it will be an air-distribution fault and maybe the flap is stuck that changes it from hot to cold air.

No heat air is blowing cold


First you have to identify what causes the problem.
To do this you have to:
1) When engine is cold check the level of coolant. If it is low fill it up.
2) Start engine and check if engine reaches regular temperature. If your engine is not heated enough it means your thermostat does not work properly and should be replaced.
3) If engine temperature is normal, then check the temperature of pipes that go to/from heater core. These pipes are located up the fire wall (easier access is from the passenger side). If pipe/pipes are cold (even engine is worm) it means you heater core is plugged and should be flushed. Keep in mind, flushing the whole cooling system is different from flushing heater core.
4) If pipe/pipes are hot/warm, turn off the fan, switch controller to the hot position, wait for 3-4 minutes and turn on the fan. Note if the cold air blows first or warm air blows first but it cools down in 5-10 seconds. If the air blows cold than it is most probably the problem with blend door or blend door actuator.
5) If air blows warm first and then cools down, then while running engine and remaining the transmission in PARKING position, press on the gas pedal until your engine reaches 3,000 RPM. Check if your heater blows warm/hot air. If it does, then your water pump does not work properly and should be replaced. If the air still cold, I would suggest to flush the heater core.

MY 1998 FOR TARUS HEATER WILL NOT WORK.WAS DRIVING


It is most probably the problem with blend door or blend door actuator. But just in case I would suggest to follow the entire procedure:

Vw polo heater blowing only cold air


Daughter's R reg VW Polo has heater probs, only just started, fan working fine and temp gauge works normally but only blows cold air. What do you think could be the prob ?

04' Passat Overheating


Hi!
It appears we have an Air lock scenario and you will need to perform a system Bleed.
Park the vehicle on level ground, when cold remove coolant filler cap, start engine and leave to idle, turn heater on full and blower to max. When engine reaches operating temperature watch and listen near coolant filler, keep clear as gurgling and hopefully a boil over should occur. Top up with very warm coolant and wait as it may do it again.
Check for heat inside vehicle if warm replace coolant cap but keep an eye on temperature gauge as the ~Air lock may have moved on from heater matrix/core so proceedure needs to be carried out again from COLD.
If persistent boil ups/over attention must made in the cylinder head
or gasket area, or possibly water pump?

No heat on passenger side and warm air on drivers side


heater radiator blocked or partially blocked,drain antifreeze and save ,remove the inlet and outlet pipes for teh heater and flush in both directions repeatedly .brown rust should come out,if not a lot comes out then fit two pieces of pipe about a foot long to heater unit pipes and mix some caustic soda and pour in one pipe with a funnel till it comes up in other pipe leave for a while then flush again and you might need to repeat this two or three times
