Year-old battery dead. Jump started fine, but security light stayed on solid while driving. Shut car off & battery dead again.

Sounds like there's a problem in the charging system. It could be as simple as a loose fanbelt, or as major as a bad alternator. I have a very similar car, 2004 Infiniti I35, same engine/alternator, and my alternator went bad in November. Replacement is a pain, the book calls for removal of the AC compressor, though my mechanic pulled the radiator instead.

I have a 1992 Oldsmobile 98 its been running fine up until now. I got a jumpstart 2 hrs ago and now it dead again is that the alternator or just dead

Lydell: If you ran your car long enough for the alternator to charge back up your battery and it failed to restart, then you either have a bad battery that is not taking a charge well, or a bad alternator. Start simple by testing your battery for its amount of charge. They will do it for you at an Auto parts store. If it is not the battery, you will have to remove the alternator and take it in the store, but they also test alternators for free.
I hope that helps you.

If i keep the negitive connecter on the battery it will go dead in a hour there is not a wire hooked up on the alternator but i dont know where it might go?

Even with the wire removed, are you saying it goes dead while driving or just sitting . if it goes dead wile driving then the alternator may not be charging the battery as you drive but if it goes dead while the car sits then there is a draw some where.
if you sent me the year make and model with the engine size and also let me know when it goes dead in 1 hour, while driving or car just sitting and i will help you solve the problem. good day

Dead battery, replaced battery and alternator but still no charge!

if its not charging while running at14.5 volts or so you have a charging problem mabey no power to the alternator if its charging at 14.5 or so and the batery load tests good and its going dead over night you have a draw from some component in the system.

A few weeks it appeared that the battery had went flat with no reason but started with jump leads. Now it won,t turn over and the whole dash flashed as if it had a short. Inside lights and radio are...

Sounds like the battery is completely dead. It's either a faulty battery(go and have it checked) or a dead alternator. To check if the alternator is bad, once the car is started, remove the negative battery cable, if it stays on, then the alternator is good, if it dies immediately, then the alternator is bad and needs replacement.

Electrical Problem - dead battery

Sounds to me like you may need a new rectifier put in the alternator,a shorted diode in the alternator could be powering up things that should go dead with the key in the off position. To prove this, instead of pulling the fuse, take the plug out of the alternator and if all is well, you have your answer.
