Question about 2006 Volvo S40
I have a Volvo S40 2004.5 every once in a while I get a "key failure" message and the car won't start. Try both keys and it doesn’t start. Usually after a couple of tries it starts (usually after a smack on the ignition switch).
Last night it happens again I try the usual but to no good, but I try something different that work.
If I insert the key it doesn’t engage (you don't hear it) but if you push it once inserted it will engage and while still pushing it must be turn for the car to start. Does anyone know what is wrong?? How to change the part if any?
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

SOURCE: Car won't start
If there is a blinking car icon with an "X" over it. This icon means the Immobilizer has been activated and hence won't allow the car to start. It could be due to a bad SCU, Start Control Unit. The SCU is actually the ignition switch on these cars.
Most of the time it's triggered by the anti-theft system..You can try this trick i learned that the dealers won't tell you...try locking and unlocking of the doors five times with the remote to reset the immobilizer and see if this helps.
Good luck...i hope this helps...please take a minute to rate me a fixya.

Try removing the battery for half an hour or so and then reconnecting (check you have all your radio codes etc before you do this).
