Go to your local auto parts store and ask if you can use their handheld scanner. If your car is 1996 or newer you can plug it into the connector under the dash to the right of your steering wheel and zero out the code.

Engine light on

Have you checked the spark plugs since the light came on? you say that you belive they caused the light to come on? If this is true, are you sure that you spaced them properly? Proper spacing is crucial to making sure they fire correctly and every time. Also, are the correct wires put back in the correct firing order? If all this has been done correctly, take a look at the spark plugs. Do they still look new? Are they covered with oil or early signs of excessive corrosion? Appearences by any of these could point to problems with gaskets. Hope this helps.

I did a oil change and spark plugs on my 2002

that happens sometimes dont worry. As long as the light isnt blinking it is fine. Just drive it for a few days. If it doesnt clear itself, take it to a shop and have then clear it for free or cheap. You could also disconnect your battery for 15 minutes or so and it will reset the computer and whipe the check engine light off. Sometimes if you have a bad plug or all cyclinders arent firing it causes the check engine light to come on. now that everything is replaced just do what I said above.

Maxima spark plug change

I doubt that your check engine light came on because of your spark plugs. I am not for 100% sure but unless your spark plugs are so bad that they produce no spark at all they aren't going to make your check engine light come on.

First I would unhook the negative cable from your battery for 15 minutes and then put it back on and see if that clears the check engine light. If it does great! But their still was a reason that your check engine light came on in the first place.

If you haven't had the plugs, wires, rotor and distributor cap changed in a while I would start with that. Those are the easiest things to change and should be change every 30-50 thousand miles anyways.

I'm not saying changing those parts will eliminate your check engine light but atleast you will know those items aren't the problem. Also you could change the fuel filter as well.

I'm not sure if your car is a v6 or not but I bet it is. If it is a v6 you will have 3 spark plugs on the left and 3 on the right side of your engine about have way down from the top of the engine.

Each sparkplug will have a thick black wire going to it. You can pull this wire off to get to the spark plug. The end of the wire will have a boot that sits on the top of the spark plug.

Then you will just use a deep well socket(In most cases) to unscrew the spark plugs.

If you know what the distributor looks like you can follow the 6 wires coming off it directly to each spark plug.

I hope this helps you get that check engine light off and good luck,
Feel free to post up your results and I will try to help you a little more because I'll bet your check engine light is due to a faulty sensor such as an oxygen sensor, throttle position sensor or something along those lines.

I would take the car to someone with a obd scanner and let them check which code made the check engine light come on and then you won't be just randomly changing parts. Which will save money. Most garages and even some parts stores have a scanner they can hook up and check codes for you. Yet again good luck!

It may not turn off the check engine light, sometimes those have to be reset. The issue of the car sputtering could have many causes. I would first check to see if you have loose plug wires or cracked wires. Check for cracks by putting the car in a dark area and looking at the engine while it runs. If you see sparks coming from the wires, it's time for a change. If that cures it, stop there. If not, move on to the plugs and check them out.
