How to check bad trans mount...

I was just informed that the trans mount on the 1998 Ford Escort LX is commonly known to go bad but how can I check for myself to see if it is? I looked it up online and I can get a new one for around 35.00 bucks and I could replace it myself. I just need to know how to check the trans mount.

To check it you need to use a pry bar and rock the motor around, as well as use a jack to raise the engine/trans assembly and see if the mount has too much play.

Goto any major parts store and buy the manual for the car its $15, or they usually will let ya look at it to see what ya need, but buying an older car i recomend buying the book, plus it will tell you exactly how to change the mounts, as well as many other repairs

47,880 miles, needs front ransmission mount $300 parts & labor also needs left outer tie rod end $240 parts & labor. Which is most important to repair first-- I have saved $200.Car still holding...

The tie rod end is more important of the 2 because of safety. But according to prices, I would shop around other shops. $300 sounds high for trans mount. Just for kicks, call a parts store and ask for outer tie rod and trans mount for '88 escort or you can even check online Advance, autozone both have good inline stores. I bet you'll find "your quoted shop" has very inflated prices.

Trans mount?

The moun sounds like it is probably bad. But you are addressing SHAKING. Most motors don't SHAKE. It may have a miss to it or not be running smoothly. It may need a tune up or have bad gas. Just remember this car is 12 years old and may need some simple TLC.

Shaking from engine

I can tell you that these cars all wear out those mounts, very commom.

And that mount being out will cause the problems you described, hes probably right.

You might tell him if hes so sure that is the problem, and if he wants to sell the car, to split the cost 50/50 with ya then see what he says.

Fluctuating Speedometer

The speed senser is mounted on the transmission. This device is an slocrto magnatic motor and they cost less than $100 there held in with one bolt and have an electrical connector. Many times if it's bad enough the check engine light will come on. This problem but the heating up but work OK cild is a good chance the senser has failed.. The trans mission should be checked for overheating as the senser failure will be heal related

My speedometer stopped working on my 1998 ford zx2 escort

Same thing happened on my 1998 escort lx, same trans as yours if you have an automatic like mine. Anyway my problem was I had to take out the old speed vehicle sensor, which is an electronic item, so don't be looking for any spinning cables like in the old days. It is located between the engine and firewall held in by one bolt if I remember and of course it is a knuckle scraper getting it out! When I took it out there was a plastic gear at the end of it that did not turn freely. The new one was about 50 dollars and the gear would spin freely at the bottom of the sensor. I put it in and it worked fine.

Good Luck
