Question about 1997 Volkswagen Passat

2 Answers

When the car changes from 3-4 and 4-5, it revs like the car downshifts! - When the car changes from 2-3, it drives fine I also notice that when i cold start the car, i am able to drive without any slippage for 5 minutes until after the car warms up - Then,it slips badly and I am almost unable to drive in 4th or 5th gear up hills or on straightaways. CEL went away! I dont know how that happens, but it's gone. I am seriously thinking it might be the Transmission Control Module, but every mechanic claims that my transmission does not have enough pressure to change gears. It seem electrical, but I do not know for certain. Any ideas? p0730 error code volkswagen touran 2004

Pertaing to the code PO730 730 isn't (open or short) its ratio error. It corresponds to 00652 gear monitering implausable.
But, the computer uses the output speed sensor to determine 00652 so you'll need to fix that code first. The 722 can be the G68 or the wiring to it, or connection to it, or in some rare circumstances the TCM itself. Best thing to do here is to replace the G68 or try to pinpoint it with some ohms testing. Ohms checking is only conclusive when you find a problem. Meaning if you ohm check the sensor and it checks ok it could still be bad intermittantly. Same goes for the wiring. But if you ohm check it and it checks bad, then its bad. For the layman, the best step would be to slap a G68 on it. Its under the mount bracket. Mount bracket bolts are stretch bolts and should be replaced when removed and reinstalled.

P0730 simply means Incorrect gear ratio code.

1. This is a pretty guaranteed indication that the transmission is indeed slipping. It sounds to me like you will be needing a replacement transmission, the boots and filter will not solve your problem.

2. There is a pressure loss problem and with those codes it’s likely that it’s more than just low fluid. You can check with a transmission shop but I’ve got a feeling that transmission is toasted and a rebuilt or replacement is in your future.

I hope this will help you out.

It sounds like you may have a vacuum leak, or 2
Check all hoses around gearbox and engine to ensure they are all a snug fit and do not appear worn or split. You can check for vacuum leaks by spraying a mist in the direct area and watch to see if it gets sucked in. Move each hose around while at idle to see if the revs change.
Good Luck I hope it helps

You describe a drivability issue which should turn on the Check Engine Light. Find an OBDII scanned and scan the ECU (Engine Control Unit) for any powertrain control trouble codes, then get back to me with those codes. We can take it from there.

the car is fitted with a fuzzy logic gearbox, computer controlled within the engine management system.it will try to make you drive as economically as possible taking into account the gas pedal possition/road speed and load.it will also adapt to your driving skills.
so if you drive in town all the time it will change at higher revs and out of town, if you accelerate gently, lower down the rev range.Try this.without using the gas pedal put the car in drive and let the car do the work,it will accelerate on its own upto 4th gear.
then try again, from stop, keeping your foot about 1/3rd down on the gas and let the car do the work try not to move your foot.then, if you can, drive using only a max of 1/3rd gas pedal all the time and you will find within 100 miles the car has adapted to this and your gas mileage will go thru the roof. also the car will adapt to high grade gas.adjusting engine output to match.

all vw cars have a computer on board that controls a fuzzylogic gearbox.the racier you drive the higher the revs before upchange and vise versa ie low/low change so the harder you drive the more noticable the gearshift will be in auto mode.manual mode will always be jerky compared to a std auto box.THE JOYS OF NEW TECHNOLOGY.....

I believe you have a 4l60e transmission.Do you have a chck engine light? The unit may have a 3-2 downshift solenoid going bad or a possible band ''servo'' leaking. The band applies in 2nd and 4th.You may also have a shift solenoid starting to malfnction......Best

Is it a turbo? You may be having a fuel-cut issue. Has teh problem happened since? If this only happens once is a while, it will be hard to diagnose.
