Question about 2003 GMC Sonoma Extended Cab

1 Answer

I have a 2003, GMC, Sonoma that has a problem that's causing a failure of all of my instruments (gas, volts, oil pressure, temp, speedometer, odometer). Also, when I turn the key off, several of the lights on both sides of the instruments start pulsating (Security, Service Engine, Gate, Battery, etc...). That happens only when the truck is turned off and the key is out. A good friend of mine who is ASE certified (not some backyard mechanic) pulled down the instrument panel and checked the wire harnesses, fuses and regulators (I believe it was the regulators under the hood...?), and he found nothing. He also looked at the back of hte panel to see if anything looked like it had been overheated. Still, nothing. He believed that the problem might be the instrument cluster and that there may have been a recall on my year/make/model truck. So, here's two questions: 1. Does this sound like an instrument cluster to you folks too? 2. Has there been a recall, and how would I qualify to have it replaced if that is indeed the problem. Thanks to anyone who may help.

Warranty on a seven year old motor, you joking ,not sure of the fault though, have a feeling its the instrument cluster but it could be the ECU playing up as well ,what you need is an identical vehicle side by side and swop bits till you find the right one

'94 Gmc Sonoma 4.3L Starts loosing Power and making weird Rattle Noise when reaching operating temperature. Also water tank looks like there is a bit oil in it. Could it be the cylinder head gasket?

Oil in the coolant is usually an intake manifold gasket problem on these engines. If a head gasket failure the engine will normally overheat and give erratic temp guage readings. Make sure the oil level is full. Is the rattle noise coming from the engine? Some times the exhaust (converter) will fail and the catylist will seperate causing a rattle noise from the exhaust and plug it up giving a no power situation

Speedometer gets stuck

GM used a bunch of "stepper motors" in the dash cluster in this and many other vehicles in this time that were prone to failure. Speedo, Oil pressure, Temperature, Gas gauge - you name it - they were all the same stepper motor.

You can replace them yourself for short money - but you need soldering tools and skills. It's a great time to replace dash lamps, too. Check out eBay for parts.

The speedometer stopped working, the oil pressure guage works intermittantly, the gas guage is on intermitantly also.

Take your truck to a GM dealer and have the Body Control Module checked. The bcm controls most electrical and display functions inside of your vehicle.

I have a 2001 gmc sonoma. my odometer, gas gauge, and temp. gauge stopped working. i checked the fuses for the instrument panel cluster, but they were fine. where do i go from here?

The stepper motors go bad. Did you notice any needle vibrations before the failure. Could be a sign of corrosion. Common Chevy prob.
