I have had to replace 4 x ignition coils in 12 months & now one has gone again , what's causing this ?

Random multiple misfire P0300, P0302, P0304 on 2006 Kia Rio


A competent mechanic will check all probable causes associated with these DTC codes.
Code P0300: Random-Multiple misfire detected. Probable causes:
1. Vacuum leaks, damaged hoses, or improper routing
2. Fuel contamination
3. Ignition system - Ignition module, coil, spark plugs and wires
4. Fuel system
Code P0302: Cylinder 2 misfire detected. Probable causes:
1. Control unit software in need of updating
2. Faulty PCM or ECM
3. Faulty fuel injector
4. Ignition system
5. Fuel system
Code 0304: Cylinder 4 misfire detected. Probable causes:
1. Control unit software in need of updating
2. Faulty PCM or ECM
3. Faulty fuel injector
4. Ignition system
5. Fuel system

Be sure the invoice enumerates all of these probable causes as having been checked. Also, some of the replacement parts installed earlier may be faulty.

Try leaving the dress up cover over the coil packs off. It may be engine heat. Also check alternator voltage is not over 14.6 volt when engine running at fast idle. You are not alone with this problem.

Did u find code p0306 comes up ? Two things can cause this if the plug and coil have been replaced.the intake manifold may be leaking in the area of cyllinder 6 or its a mechanical issue.try doing a cyllinder misfire test and also check the compression on all cyllinders

Buddy has a 2004 hyundai accent, 1.6l I replaced coils about a month ago, and they have blown again, anyone run into a problem like this Hate to keep replacing coils any idea of what cause's coils to keep...


Verify that the plugs are gapped properly & be sure to clean the area they install in & by all means use di-electric grease on the top of the plug & bottom of the coils. Unfortunately, coils can accept the spark back into themselves causing arcing & such just as easily as they can send a spark through the insulator of the spark plug , if that path is easier.
Di-electric grease has been recommended for High energy ignitions since the mid '80s as it does aid in keeping the spark channeled through the plug. Also, check your ground strap from the firewall to the engine & be sure it is a good connection on both ends. Good luck.

If you have a volt/ohm meter, you may want to first ohm check the resistance between the two spark plug towers on each ignition coil pack. Simply remove the spark plug wires from each coil pack and test. Both (if good) should test about the same resistance, (about 5-7 kOhms, but I don't have the exact specs handy on this particular vehicle. The reading may be higher, maybe around 7-12kOhms) but nonetheless, the reading of the 1-4 coil pack should closely match the 2-3 coil pack. If not, the new coil pack may be faulty and should be returned for a replacement.

Also, when you remove the 1-4 coil pack, take a look at the primary spade connectors (2 lugs) coming out of the ignition module. Make certain these are clean and free of rust or corrosion. If so, simply (and gently) use a finger nail file or 400 (or equivilent) sandpaper to file the corrosion off and re-attach the coil pack.

If one or both of these don't fix the problem, you may have to look at replacing the ignition module. But only do that after exhausting the other simpler and less expensive tests! :)

If the hi-tension wires check out ok you may want to check on the distributor and the contacts at its end and in the inside. You may also want to test the ignition coil.

if the light is flashing it most like hasly some sort of misfire or converter failure, p0171 and p0174 is lean bank 1 and 2, replace you upper and lower plenum gaskets, while they have they off have they replace your ignition coil, plugs and wires, windstars are known for 2 things, lean codes,(plenum gaskets) misfire(bad ignition coil)

 bad ignition module may be destroying the coil...although I've never heard of such a thing.  Are you sure the coil is bad again?
