Question about 1992 Mercury Sable

1 Answer

When I turn on the ignition switch, all of the electrical systems come on; however, something in the engine area makes a clicking sound. Could this be a problem with the starter?

It could be, but if I were to guess, I would say a bad battery or possibly a bad connection.

New stater, stater still makes clicking sound

First you should check to make sure the engine is not locked up by turning it over manually. If you can turn the engine manually, then check your battery terminal ends to make sure you have good, clean and tight connections. Typically, a faulty electrical connection is the main culprit that will cause your situation. If you still suspect a faulty connection, try having someone turn the ignition key while you wiggle the battery cables to see if it will try to start. This should help you narrow down the problem area.

Taurus 96, electrical problem, clicking sound, engine cranks

close, there is an emergeny fuel shutoff switch hidden in the trunk of these things burried under the carpeting, you probably have something resting on it OR water got on it and is shorting it out, my friend had a 92 taurus 3L and the switch was in the trunk, 14 inches off the trunk floor on the drivers side wall, should be a small **** in the carpeting you can push your finger through and feel it.

IS THERE A FUSE FOR THE ECU ON A 92 EAGLE TALON

I don't think so. I got a 95 and I've done all kinds of electrical checking for various things and to my knowledge there isn't. There's fuses for the ignition and engine along with other electrical items but no specific computer fuse that would turn off a computer. I assume the car won't start?

If your car is simply not starting it could be something as simple as the neutral safety switch if you only hear a click turning the key. Disconnect under left side dash. White and has a green and black wire coming from button behind clutch pedal.

If car cranks but just wont start then could be numerous things. Check the 30 and 40 amp fuses under hood. Make sure battery terminals are connected tight and clean with brush tool if needed. If battery is fine and charged, I assume you have checked, then I'd focus on the ignition system.

ignition switch (in steering column)
neutral safety switch (disconnect above pedal)
starter relay (under radio)
starter solenoid
starter

If cranks then neutral, ignition and relay switches are fine
If clicks then ignition and relay fine but neutral switch or solenoid may be bad

Engine will not turn over or make much of a sound.

It sounds like it is probably your ignition switch. Either that or your starter selenoid.

98 bonneville no start

The anti-theft system has nothing to do with spark . When it won't start check for B+ voltage at the ignition module . pin P a pink wire . Check pin K for a good ground . Check the 18X & 3X crank sensor signals to the PCM . It's good you have a snap on scan tool an can check sensor data , but to check cam an crank signal's you really need a scope ! Does your snap on tool have a lab scope ( oscilloscope ) Do you know what this is ?
How to test crank sensor on GM 3800 engine 3x and 18x signals

Do you have access to wiring diagrams ? Check electrical distribution in an out of the ignition switch .Free wiring diagrams here
http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Enter vehicle info Year , make , model and engine size . Under system click on electrical distribution , then under subsystem click on power distribution . Click the search button , then the blue link ! I wouldn't think the ignition switch being the problem but you never know without testing ! Car will not start.

Yes or it could just be a loose connection @ the starter and/or battery. Check your battery connections and possibly clean them and check the connection at the starter
