How to bypass the Generator Battery Control Module on 2006 Chevy truck so that I can get alternator to put out 14 volt all the time.

    The module that I am talking about is a small black box on the negetive battery cable next to the battery.

The alternator on your truck is a self contained unit. The voltage output is controlled by a rectifier bridge and diode trio. If you ground the test point on the back of the alternator (near positive post) it will go full out. Remember if you run at full output constant, you will damage e.c.m., g.e.m., and battery. You will also shorten bulb life and possibly damage radio.

My battery light came on while i was driving than a few minutes later everything shut off. The battery was replaced in january and alternator was replaced in october.. what could be the problem?


For the alternator to work B+ voltage must be applied to the heavier gage wire on the back of the alternator ,plus the alternator is computer controlled , by the PCM !

Your best is to have a qualified repair shop check it out ! Could have DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes stored !
DTC P0562
The powertrain control module (PCM) continuously monitors that the system voltage stays within the proper range. If the PCM detects an excessively high system voltage, DTC P0563 will set. A high voltage condition may cause a stalling condition or other drive ability concerns.
DTC P0621
The powertrain control module (PCM) uses the generator turn on signal circuit to control the generator. A high side driver within the PCM allows the PCM to turn the generator ON and OFF. When Generator operation is desired, the PCM sends a 5 volt signal to the voltage regulator via the generator turn on signal circuit. This causes the voltage regulator to begin controlling the generator field circuit. Once the Generator is enabled by the PCM, the voltage regulator controls generator output independently of the PCM. Under certain operating conditions, the PCM can turn Off the generator by turning Off the 5 volt signal on the generator turn on signal circuit. The PCM has fault detection circuitry which monitors the state of the generator turn on signal circuit. If the fault detection circuit senses a voltage other than what is expected, this DTC will set. The voltage regulator also contains fault detection circuitry. If the regulator detects a problem, the regulator will ground the generator turn on signal circuit, pulling the voltage low. This also causes the PCM to set the DTC.
DTC P0622
Checking for codes an voltage drop testing the connections an using a scan tool to check data parameters is the only way to solve your problem . Which means taking to a qualified repair shop !

I have a 2002 GMC Envoy, Quite frequently my charging light will come on and state that I only have 10 volts coming out and then all the sudden jump to 14 and work perfectly fine


How many mile are on you vehicle ? Have you ever had Alternator replaced before ? You alternator maybe starting to fail , brushes or the voltage regulator .

Pontiac Montana sv6 2006 electrical or what? Volts keep jump in from 12.3 to 15 while I drive .got stuck on highway 3 times when the voltage hits below 12.1 just swapped the battery...please help


Have your (alternator) Charging system tested ! .This is a computer controlled charging system .
The body control module (BCM) is a class 2 device. It communicates with the powertrain control module (PCM)/engine control module (ECM) and the instrument panel cluster (IPC) for electrical power management (EPM) operation. The BCM determines the output of the generator and sends the information to the PCM/ECM for control of the generator field control circuit. It monitors the generator field duty cycle signal circuit information sent from the PCM/ECM for control of the generator. It monitors a battery current sensor, the battery positive voltage circuit, and estimated battery temperature to determine battery state-of-charge (SOC). The BCM performs idle boost and load management operations.
Powertrain Control Module (PCM)/Engine Control Module (ECM) The PCM/ECM directly controls the generator field control circuit input to the generator. It monitors the generator's generator field duty cycle signal circuit and sends the information to the BCM. The PCM/ECM will override the BCM control of the generator when one of the following conditions is met:

The engine cooling fans are on high speed.

There is a high fuel demand.

The calculated ambient air temperature is less that 0?°C (32?°F).

Volts slowly drop to where what quits ,The vehicle stops running ? Is the charge indicator light lit on the instrument cluster /? are any lights lit on the instrument cluster ? The instrument panel cluster (IPC) illuminates the charge indicator and the BATTERY NOT CHARGING message is displayed in the message center when the following occurs:
The engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM) detects that the generator output is less than 11 volts or greater than 16 volts. The IPC receives a serial data message from the ECM/PCM requesting illumination.

2006 Buick lucerne; while driving "service battery


Test the alternator out put.. First check battery for voltage.. should be 12v or slightly better.. Start engine and check the battery again.. and it now should be 14= VOLTS.. IIF ITS NOT 14+THE ALTERNATOR IS POSSIBLY BAD.

I have a 1991 chevy s10 that i had to replace the ignition control module, was wondering if a bad voltage regulator might have caused the ICM to fail!!!!


I also have a 91 S-10 and have recently had to replace my ICM i really think that it's due to high mileage and just wore out more than anything else

Servicing battery charging system. car won't start. 2006 chevy impala.


Check the battery terminals for cleanlyness and tightness.
Check the voltage when stopped, it should be 12 volts.
Check the voltage with the motor running, it should be 14 volts. If not the alternator is not charging.
If the battery voltage is low then it may need replacing.

Only a guess,but you could put a voltage regulator
in it,if you can find one

You may have a generator repair shop that will sell
you one,or try an auto parts store

Unfortunately the days of the 1960's thru 1980's have
passed us by.

Now you get punished with a questionable
rebuilt, for several hundred dollars

Check ALL ground wires in the engine compartment
& I mean any wire or battery cable

Remove them & clean all of them

Alternator problem?


check battery voltage with engine off. should be @ 12.5v
check with engine running at about 1500 rpms. It should be @ 14 volts. If yes, it is ok. I think you are ok.

here's how it works.

The charging system consists of a generator which generates current to supply the vehicle electrical system and maintain the battery in a charged condition.
The generator is driven by the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to Section 303-05 . When the engine is started, the generator begins to generate alternating current (AC) which is converted to direct current (DC) internally. The DC current is controlled by the voltage regulator (located on the back of the generator), and then supplied to the battery.
The charging system voltage is controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM). The generator charges the battery and at the same time it supplies all the electrical loads that are required. The battery is more effectively charged with a higher voltage when the battery is cold and a lower voltage when the battery is warm. The PCM is able to adjust the charging voltage according to battery temperature by using a signal from the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor. This means that the voltage setpoint is calculated by the PCM and communicated to the regulator by a communication link.
The PCM simultaneously controls and monitors the output of the generator. When the current consumption is high or the battery is discharged the system is able to increase the idle speed.
To minimize the engine drag when starting the engine, the PCM controls the generator. The generator does not produce any output until the engine has started. The PCM then progressively increases the output of the generator.
The PCM controls the operation of the charging system warning indicator in the instrument cluster. The PCM is therefore responsible for turning the warning indicator off after the engine is started and illuminating it under fault conditions (when the generator is not generating the correct amount of current with the engine running). The warning indicator will also be illuminated by the PCM at key - on engine off and stall conditions.

2006 Chevy Silverado alternator intermittent charging


Perfectly normal.
Starting with the 2005 model year, light duty full size pickups and utilities are equipped with a new Regulated Voltage Control (RVC) system. This system reduces the targeted output of the generator to 12.6-13.1 volts when in "Fuel Economy Mode" to improve fuel economy. The generator may exit "Fuel Economy Mode" if additional voltage is required. This will cause the voltmeter to fluctuate between 12 and 14 volts as opposed to non-regulated systems that usually maintain a more consistent reading of 14 volts. This fluctuation with the RVC system is normal system operation and NO repairs should be attempted.
