They are very easy to change
There are usually only 2 ways to replace tail lights -- either unscrew the lens from the outside if there are screws showing, or, (more likely with this older model), open trunk, find the access panel and remove it, then reach in and unscrew the light socket by turning 1/2 turn counterclockwise.
The problem is the crankshaft sensor for sure. It is mounted behind the crankshaft pulley which is pretty difficult to get off as you need a special puller. A shop should charge about 1.5 hours for this job. It is a very common problem.
