When the engine stops, the power steering stops because the engine powers the power steering pump with the serpentine belt.
There could be many reasons the engine stopped and the fuel pump is just one of them. Check for DTCs and diagnose the vehicle electronically with a pro grade scan tool computer.
A 96 Corolla will have either a cable operated speedo or an electronic sender unit mounted into the gearbox. Replacement of the cable requires the removal of the instrument panel, which in turn requires the fixing screws removed from the inner and top of the cover, Once removed there are four more 8 mm bolts, two on each side holding in the instrument panel. The cable is accessed from the engine compartment and is mounted onto the fire wall, It has a joint allowing the two pieces to be separated so removal is made easier. The other type is a sender unit fitted into the same place where the cable was originally fitted. Disconnect the electrics, loosen and remove the single bolt and replace the sender. Regards John .
Hi Kim, the speedo on your vehicle is electronic. Inspect the cables for breakage and if they are fine replace the sender unit fitted into the gearbox. Regards John
1991 ,you sure this is so old the speedo cable is no way related to the gearbox on such a old vehicle ,now these 350 things are a 7.4 litre and i serviced one last week a 1989 camper van version here in spain and the access for the spark plugs leaves a lot to be desired ,So anyway this one of yours has had its day and well past its sell by date plus its not politicaly correct anymore to have such a CO2 pollutant machine ,well enough of trying to wind up my american cousins so look around for a replacement vehicle as this will be a cheaper alternative ,now how about a nice mercedes vito diesel manual or better still a ford transit diesel with a manual gearbox and the amount of fuel costs you will save will pay for the vehicle .
If the Speedo dial is the only thing not working then this is more than likely a problem with the dial itself. If you are also noticing that the odometer is not increasing then it may indicate a problem with the system measuring the revolutions from your gearbox.
More than likely one of the gears in the speedo is slipping on it's shaft. I have a Mercedes with the same proble. I doubt that this is a fixable problem short of replacing the unit. Contact a speedometer shop in a major metropolitan area and see what they say. If you live in the country or suburbs you're porobably out of luck.
