My gear shifter broke loose and is now moving freely along with the needle but there is no hesitation or clicking of a gear engaging. What could my problem be? I know that excessive pressure trying to pull the transmission out of park can sometimes snap the retaining clip. PLEASE HELP

You have to secure the cable back into the correct position
if you are not applying the foot brake when selecting out of park you will have difficulty as thee is a switch on the brake that releases the lock pin that keeps it in park

SOURCE: manual transmission shifter will not engage

Sounds to me that the shifter broke, i believe the shifter has a ball end that slips into a pocket in trans. that moves for gear selection and that ball brook off end of shifter. if its got a linkage set up most likely samething either shifting arms came off or shifter broke where linkage rods connect.

SOURCE: automatic transmission wont catch into any gear

You sould have been moore frequent on your transmission fluid changes, and you shouldn't have taken it to Jiffy Lube either. Your best bet is to drain and fill the trans fluid run it shift gears. Drain and fill again. Do this 3 times. Yeah the transmission fluid is expensive. on the last drain and fill you want to get a bottle of LUBE GUARD from NAPA or who ever sells it. put the whole 10oz bottle in. Shift Rev, 1, 2, 3, D. Neutral Rev D. If that don't work then you have bad seals.

SOURCE: 2001 impala shifting issue

I have a 2001 base impala and 6 months ago I experienced the same problem. I was driving on the street and all of a sudden my car acted as if it was in neutral. I pulled over and neither of the shifts engaged. The dealership said that my torque converter went bad. Somehow the bad torque converter caused shavings to get into my transmission. They gave me a new torque converter and flushed my transmission. My transmission was almost 2 years old; therefore, it was under warranty.

Buick Century 2000 gear shifter moves freely will not start

Sounds like your shift cable came unhooked or just plain Broke, it hooks to shifter and hooks to transmission, If it moves freely I would say it's Broken, and that is why car won't start cause it is still in drive

Gear lever loose & wont engage in 06 renault magane manual

Sounds to me that your cable is broke therefor not putting the car in gear. This can happen real easy. Have someone move the shifter for you and look at the side of your trans and see it the cable is moving. If not then you can do a visible inspection of it and see if it is broke.

Gear select lever is very loose. It move forward

There is a pin that goes through the shifter that hold it in place, along with a spring just inside where the end of the shifting lever is, that makes the lever "return" after you pull it back to shift. These springs can break and bind up. Take a look at both.

The shifter moves freely in the gear box like some linkage broke

If both cable ends are attached then the cable broke. Replace it.
