The drivers side door locking system is horrid. Its the only door that won't open. The handle won't work on the inside or the outside and the whole metal bar connected to the lock that sticks out of the door came out. We cant afford to get it fixed but my dad and I are tired of climbing through the passanger door and over the arm rest to get to the drivers seat, So we're trying to figure out how to fix it. We think we have it somewhat, but we can't be sure without schematics. Help?

This worked for me on 2008 Mk5 Golf, after the rear passenger door would not open fro outside or inside.
Hold the inside door latch open and keep it extended, then with the key fob open and close the door locks (still holding the inside latch open). Keep locking and unlocking the door, then it made a kluck and it released.
Try a slim jim first, down the side of the window. Or AAA or locksmith. If no luck, remove the seat first. Find the screws and bolts around the door handle and arm rest. Most Ford's have screws around the outer side of the panel. I don't believe your's does. The panel lifts or pops off. Once the panel is off, you can reach down and open the door. Just a note. I have done some to where the panel came out in pieces.
your linkage rod to the outside door handle has disconnected , if you open up the door panel to access the lock linkage rods you will find the rod that is disconnected . There is a plastic bushing the rod is secured with if it is broken you must replace it , if the rod will not stay in place replace the bushing , hope this helps you out
My friend just had this problem and he reached in and pulled the inside door handle back as far as it would go, and then let it go, allowing it to 'snap' back. For some reason this fixed it. We have no idea why. By doing this on one door, both rear door locks freed up and the rear locks are now working. Before, both rear locks were stuck and you could not open the doors from the inside nor the outside. Not sure why it works, but maybe it will work for you!
this is a common problem with VW door handles, but an easy fix!!! The door handle needs to be replaced as the fork that lifts the lock has broken off or cracked. Depending on the model it is easy to remove the door handle. spring off the Crome mld on the front and on the slam side of the door behind the rubber u will find a phillips screw. Under the crome mld is the other.
Good luck.
since it is the drivers front door it could be the outside door handle , the rod that goes from the handle to the lock asbly or the lock asbly its self take the door trim panel off and then loos inside the door and latch the door with the door open. open the door with the outside door handle and watch the rod and the lever that the rod is pushing down the lever might not be pushing the lever down far enough to release the lock. If the lock does not open try pushing down on the lever and see if the lock releases if it does ck the outside door handle for cracks along the hinges of the handle I have found that most of the time that it is the outside door handle cracked and the rod is not moving the lever far enough to release the lock.
I have a 1996 Jetta Trek edition, and had the same problem both sides, driver and passenger side.
It's the door lock assembly, there is a little linkage that breaks inside, you need to replace the whole lock assembly, buy it at an auto salvage $40 - $60, or buy it at the dealership at cost, replacing it yourself, from
