Causes of Power Steering to fail.

• Contamination problems occur more frequently in rack and pinion power steering systems. Contamination can occur when pumps fail, hoses deteriorate, or moisture gets into the power steering fluid. All of these problems result in material contaminating the power steering fluid which can plug small orifices in the steering system, increase friction, and interfere with the fluids hydraulic characteristics, resulting in a failure of the power steering system.

Low fluid

• Low power steering fluid levels reduce the amount of hydraulic pressure created by the power steering pump, resulting in hard steering. Low fluid levels also cause increased wear of the power steering pump from inadequate lubrication and high fluid temperatures which further accelerates pump wear. Low power steering fluid can cause a power steering pump to wear out prematurely and can result in the eventual failure of the power steering system if not corrected.

Snapped belt

• Many vehicles use power steering pumps which are driven by a belt connected to the crankshaft of the engine. Worn belts can slip causing a reduction in the fluid pressure produced by the power steering pump, which increases the effort needed to operate the steering system. Power steering belts that catastrophically cause an immediate loss of power steering as the pump is no longer being driven by the engine.

Worn pump

• As power steering pumps are operated and age they wear out. The seals and internal parts of the power steering pump break down over time and lead to an incremental loss of fluid pressure. As the pump wears out, pump noise and steering effort increases. Worn out pumps will eventually fail, leading to a total loss of fluid pressure and a failure of the power steering system.

Leaks

• Power steering systems require hydraulic fluid to operate. Hydraulic power steering fluid can leak from worn or damaged hoses and failing seals. When enough fluid is lost, the power steering pump can overheat or wear out prematurely, resulting in a loss of hydraulic pressure and failure of the power steering system.

What is year--make--model?
Usually with new pump, I rotate the old fluid out while putting new fluid in, that goes with the power steering pump change.
I take the return line loose from pump that should be low pressure line, usually held on with hose clamp. The high pressure line should have threaded fitting.
Aim the return line into container, turn pulley with my fingers, the old fluid should come out return line. At the same time, you have to add new fluid to the pump reservoir. When the fluid from the return line runs clear/new fluid, your done.
If no circulation, maybe a faulty or clogged power steering line?

I just finished replacing mine.

It is much easier if you do these steps:

1. Remove the serpentine belt.
2. Remove the nuts holding the main fuse box over the battery.
3. Remove the reinforcing bar over the battery.
4. Remove the battery.
5. Remove the windsheild washer tank.
6. Now you have access to remove the pump pulley. Without removing the stuff, it may be possible, but it will be extremely difficult.
7. Remove the pump pulley.
8. Loosen the high pressure hose fitting.
9. Remove the return line clamp.
10. Remove the power steering pump mounting bolts.
11. Remove the high pressure hose fitting.
12. Remove the power steering pump while sliding off the low pressure hose.
13. Remove the clips holding the reservoir on the pump.
14. Remove the reservoir.
15. Install new o-ring on the reservoir.
16. Install reservoir on new pump.
17. Install clips to hold reservoir on pump.
18. Install new o-ring on high pressure fitting.
19. Place new pump in position while sliding on low pressure hose.
20. Loosely attache high pressure fitting.
21. Tighten pump to mounts.
22. Tighten high pressure fitting.
23. Install clamp on low pressure hose.
24. Install power steering pulley.
25. Install washer reservoir.
26. Install battery.
27. Install reinforcing cross member.
28. Install fuse panel.
29. Install serpentine belt.
30. Bleed the power steering system.

YOU FIRST YOU NEED TO REMOVE COOLANT RECOVERY RESERVOIR. YOU NEED TO REMOVE DRIVE BELT.NOW PLACE DRAIN PAN UNDER CAR IN LINE WITH POWER STEERING PUMP.NOW SIPHON OUT MUCH POWER STEERING FLUID OUT RESERVOIR USING A SIPHON.ONCE FLUID REMOVE OUT POWER STEERING PUMP.USE A DEEP 3/8 SOCKET ABOUT 13M OR 14 M YOU NEED A SHORT EXTENSION AND A 3/8 RATCHET WRENCH.TO REMOVE POWER STEERING PUMP.TO LOOSEN BOLTS, TAKE DEEP SOCKET IN PULLEY HOLES . LOOK THROUGH POWER STEERING PULLEY HOLES ALIGN DEEP SOCKET THROUGH THE PULLEY HOLES TO THE PUMP BOLTS. LOOSEN ALL THREE BOLTS. YOU HAVE TO TURN PULLEY THREE TIMES TO REMOVE ALL THE POWER STEERING PUMP BOLTS.ONCE POWER STEERING PUMP BOLTS REMOVED.TAKE OLD POWER STEERING PUMP TO THE MACHINE SHOP.THEY WILL HAVE TO REMOVE PULLEY OFF OLD PUMP AND TRANSFER DRIVE PULLEY TO NEW POWER STEERING PUMP.NOW WHEN YOU INSTALL NEW POWER STEERING PUMP.MAKE SURE TO BUY A NEW O RING FOR THE HIGH PRESSURE HOSE TO POWER STEERING PUMP. WHEN ALL DONE BLEED POWER STEERING PUMP. WITH THE FRONT WHEELS TURNED ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT AND THE IGNITION KEY OFF, CHECK THE POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL AND IF LOW ADD FLUID UNTIL IT REACHES THE COLD MARK ON THE DIP STICK.SAFELY RAISE FRONT WHEEL OFF GROUND BY SUPPORTING FRONT OF THE CAR USING JACK STANDS, MAKE SURE CAR SITTING ON SOLID LEVEL GROUND. disconnect the return pipe to the reservoir,and put it into container to catch the oil.block off the hole in the reservoir[where the hose would have gone].fill reservoir with new ATF oil.jack front of vehicle up,turn the steering back and forth.that will purge any old oil into the container.briefly start motor,that will push new oil thru the system,and clean out pump.then reconnect return hose,refill reservoir,and start motor,turning the steering back and forth,making sure reservoir is always full.when the oil stops going down,put vehicle back on ground,and check power steer operations

Chrysler Cirrus/Stratus/Sebring/Avenger/Breeze 1995-1998
Power Steering Pump - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Cirrus, Stratus, Sebring Convertible and Breeze
(see Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4)

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the left strut tower. The ground cable is equipped with an insulator grommet, which should be placed on the stud to prevent the negative battery cable from accidentally grounding.
2. Siphon as much power steering fluid out of the reservoir as possible.
3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
4. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly.
5. Remove the splash shield from the right front wheel well.

1. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the pump.
2. Remove the hose connection on the power steering pump.

1. Remove the power steering adjusting bolt.
2. Remove the power steering pump rear attaching bolt.
3. If so equipped, remove the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) hydraulic control unit heat shield.
4. Remove the wheel speed sensor retainer bracket from the right inner fender.
5. Remove the wheel speed sensor sealing grommet from the right inner fender.
6. Disconnect the speed sensor wiring.
7. Push the wiring through the hole in the inner fender.
   

If not equipped with anti-lock brakes, the hole will just have a sealing plug.

1. Remove the bolt attaching the power steering front bracket to the mounting bracket. Access to the bolt is gained through the hole for the speed sensor wiring.
2. Remove the power steering pump drive belt.
3. Remove the power steering pump and the front bracket as an assembly.
   

To install:

1. Install the power steering pump and bracket.
2. Reinstall the bolt at the adjusting slot, but do not tighten.
3. Reinstall the bolt mounting the power steering pump to the rear mounting bracket, but do not tighten.
4. Reinstall the power steering pump top bolt, but do not tighten.
5. Reconnect the power steering hoses.

Use a new O-ring when reinstalling the power steering pressure hose.

1. Reinstall the drive belt.
2. Adjust the drive belt and tighten the power steering pump bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
3. Reinstall the splash shield.
4. Reinstall the tire and wheel assembly.
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
7. Refill the reservoir and bleed the power steering system.

Sebring Coupe and Avenger

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove (drain, suction pump, etc.) as much power steering fluid as possible.
3. Disconnect the return fluid line. Remove the reservoir cap and allow the return line to drain the fluid from the reservoir. If the fluid is contaminated, disconnect the ignition high tension cable and crank the engine several times to drain the fluid from the gearbox.

Cover any components located underneath the power steering pump with a shop towel to protect them from damage due to power steering fluid spillage. For example, the A/C compressor or alternator, depending on vehicle and engine, is below the power steering pump, so cover the A/C compressor or alternator with a shop towel before removing any hoses.

1. Loosen (but do not remove) the power steering pump mounting bolts and remove the drive belt.
2. Remove the pressure switch connector from the side of the pump.
3. Disconnect the pressure line.
4. Unbolt and remove the pump from the mounting bracket.

To install:

1. Clean all parts well. Inspect the pump pulley for cracks. Check the hoses carefully for cracks or signs of weakness.
2. Install the pump, wrap the belt around the pulley and lightly tighten the mounting bolts.
3. Replace the O-rings and connect the pressure line. Connect the pressure line so the notch in the fitting aligns and contacts the pump's guide bracket. Tighten the fitting to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
4. Connect the return line and secure with the clamp.
5. Fasten the pressure switch connector.
6. Adjust the power steering belt for proper tension and tighten the adjusting bolts.

Use only MOPAR ATF PLUS automatic transmission fluid type 7176, ATF+3 automatic transmission fluid, or equivalent, in the power steering system of Sebring coupe and Avenger models.

1. Refill the reservoir and bleed the power steering system.

3.0L (VIN 3) Engine


Power steering pump mounting detail (3.0L engine)

1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
   
2. Remove the accessory drive belt. The belt does not have to be removed from the engine.
   
3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
   
4. Disconnect the wiring harness connector to the oxygen sensor which is accessible through the oxygen sensor wiring harness grommet in the vehicle floor pan.
   
5. Remove the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold and remove all exhaust system hangers and isolators from the exhaust system brackets. Move exhaust system out of the way as far rearward and to the left as possible to provide access to the power steering pump.
   
6. Place a drain pan under the power steering pump. Remove the power steering fluid return line hose on the front suspension cradle. Allow the fluid to drain from the pump and hose.
   
7. Remove the accessory drive belt splash shield.
   
8. Disconnect the power steering remote reservoir supply hose from the fitting on the power steering pump. Allow fluid to drain from the hose.
   
9. Remove power steering fluid pressure line from the power steering pump and drain any excess power steering fluid.
   
10. Remove the power steering fluid return hose from the power steering pump.
    
11. Remove the rear support bracket mounted behind the power steering pump to the engine block.
    
12. Remove the 2 mounting bolts that secure the pump to the alternator/power steering pump and belt tensioner mounting bracket.
    
13. Remove the power steering pump and pulley assembly out from the vehicle. Transfer all required parts from the pump to the new replacement pump before installation.
    

To install:

1. Position the front of the power steering pump up onto the mounting bracket. Torque the 2 power steering pump-to-mounting bracket bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
   
2. Install the rear power steering pump-to-engine block support bracket. Torque the 2 support bracket mounting bolts to 40ft. lbs. (54 Nm). Install the nut to the mounting stud behind the pump and torque to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
   
3. Install the high pressure fluid line to the pump output fitting. Torque the high pressure line-to-power steering pump fitting to 275 inch lbs. (31 Nm). Be sure to inspect the pressure line O-ring for any damage before connecting the pressure line to the steering pump.
   
4. Install the low pressure power steering fluid hose to the power steering pump low pressure fitting. Be sure the hose clamps are properly reinstalled and hoses are clear of the accessory drive belts.
   
5. Install the accessory drive belt.
   
6. Install the hose on the power steering fluid return line on the front suspension cradle. Be sure the hose clamps and heat shield tubes are correctly reinstalled.
   
7. Reconnect the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold. Install the hangers and isolators onto the exhaust system brackets. torque the nuts and bolts to 250 inch lbs. (28 Nm).
   
8. Reconnect the wiring harness connectors to the oxygen sensor. Install the wiring harness grommet into the vehicle floor pan.
   
9. Install the accessory drive belt splash shield.
   
10. Remove the drain pan and lower the vehicle.
    
11. Refill the power steering pump reservoir with the correct amount of clean power steering fluid.
    
12. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Bleed the power steering system.
    
13. Run the engine and check the system for leaks and proper steering operation.
    

3.3L (VIN R) & 3.8L (VIN L) Engines

1. Remove and isolate the negative battery cable.
   
2. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Place a drain pan under the power steering pump.
   
3. Disconnect the wiring harness connector to the oxygen sensor which is accessible through the oxygen sensor wiring harness grommet in the vehicle floor pan.
   
4. Remove the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold and remove all exhaust system hangers and isolators from the exhaust system brackets. Move exhaust system out of the way as far rearward and to the left as possible to provide access to the power steering pump.
   
5. Remove the power steering fluid return line hose on the front suspension cradle. Allow the fluid to drain from the pump and hose.
   
6. Remove the accessory drive belt splash shield.
   
7. Remove accessory drive belt.
   
8. Disconnect the power steering remote reservoir supply hose from the fitting on the power steering pump. Allow fluid to drain from the hose.
   
9. Remove power steering fluid pressure line from the power steering pump and drain any excess power steering fluid.
   
10. Remove the power steering fluid return hose from the power steering pump.
    
11. Remove the rear support bracket mounted behind the power steering pump to the engine block.
    
12. Remove the 3 mounting bolts that secure the pump to the alternator/power steering pump and belt tensioner mounting bracket.
    
13. Remove the power steering pump and pulley assembly from the vehicle. Transfer all required parts from the pump to the new replacement pump before installation.
    

To install:

1. Position the front of the power steering pump up onto the mounting bracket. Torque the 3 power steering pump-to-mounting bracket bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
   
2. Install the rear power steering pump-to-engine block support bracket. Torque the support bracket mounting bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). Install the nut to the mounting stud behind the pump and torque to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
   
3. Install the high pressure fluid line to the pump output fitting. Torque the high pressure line-to-power steering pump fitting to 275 inch lbs. (31 Nm). Be sure to inspect the pressure line O-ring for any damage before connecting the pressure line to the steering pump.

12. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Bleed the power steering system.
    
13. Run the engine and check the system for leaks and proper steering operation.
    

When power steering hose replacement is required, follow these steps:

1. With the engine stopped, remove the return hose at the power steering gear, and allow the fluid to drain from this hose into a drain pan. On some cars, the vehicle must be lifted on a hoist to replace the power steering hoses.
2. Loosen and remove all hose fittings from the pump and steering gear.
3. Remove all hose-to-chassis clips.
4. Remove the hoses from the chassis, and cap the pump and steering fittings.
5. If O-rings are used on the hose ends, install new O-rings. TRW steering gear cylinder lines have gaskets that are serviced as a unit. The old gasket must be pried out of the fittings in the housing before the new lines and gaskets are installed. Lubricate O-rings with power steering fluid.
6. Reverse steps 1 through 4 to install the power steering hoses. Tighten all fittings to the manufacturer's specified torque. Be sure all hose-to-chassis clips are in place. Do not position hoses where they rub on other components.
7. Fill the pump reservoir to the full mark with the manufacturer's recommended fluid. Bleed air from the power steering system. Check the fluid level in the reservoir and add fluid as required.

Hi, no need to raise the engine. you can use these steps to replace your pump.

To replace the power steering pump, proceed as follows:

1. Disconnect the power steering return hose from the remote reservoir or pump. Allow the fluid to drain from this hose into a drain pan. Discard the used fluid.
2. Loosen the bracket or belt tension adjusting bolt, and the pump mounting bolt.
3. Loosen the belt tension until the belt can be removed. On some cars, it is necessary to lift the vehicle on a hoist and gain access to the power steering pump from underneath the vehicle.
4. Remove the hoses from the pump, and cap the pump fittings and hoses.
5. Remove the belt tension adjusting bolt and the mounting bolt, and remove the pump.
6. Check the pump mounting bolts and bolt holes for wear. Worn bolts must be replaced. If the bolt mounting holes in the pump are worn, pump replacement is necessary.
7. Reverse steps 1 through 5 to install the power steering pump. Tighten the belt as described previously, and tighten the pump mounting and bracket bolts to the manufacturer's specifications. If o-rings are used on the pressure hose, replace the o-rings. Be sure the hoses are not contacting the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, or exhaust pipe during or after pump replacement.
8. Fill the pump reservoir with the manufacturer's recommended power steering fluid, and bleed air from the power steering system as described earlier.

To replace the power steering pump, proceed as follows:
