Cruise control and tranny problems. possibly related.

Yes, there's a good possibility you have a computer problem. I'd call into a Chrysler dealership and ask if they have any recalls or information on this, as they may already be aware of this being a potential problem. This presents a serious safety issue and needs to be addressed before you end up in an accident of some sort. Also, there may be a code stored in the computer, get it scanned if you can. It won't illuminate the dashboard light because it's not an emissions related problem. In the mean time, you should find the cruise control actuator and disconnect it. I can't say where that is specifically, but you can always look up the part on many of the auto parts websites to see what it looks like.

could be one of two problems either idle control sensor or i think on that year chrysler had a start pickup and a run pickup

you probably have a bad VSS. while driving the car see if your cruise control will engage. if it doesn't , replace the VSS. (vehicle speed sensor) It will also cause your car not to shift correctly if it is not working.

Possibly a transmission issue. The transmission has a "lockup" mode, where a clutch connects the engine directly to the transmission at cruising speeds. It is then supposed to unlock at lower speeds and for stopping. If it doesn't unlock, the car will stall at a stop. Try putting it into neutral (carefullly, so you don't go into reverse) as you slow down, if it doesn't stall out, it is most likely the transmission lockup mechanism.

If it stalls in neutral it is an engine issue. Bad idle control, bad ignition (it's easier to fire at high speed), bad fuel injector, bad air flow/pressure sensor... and more possibilities.

You sould have recieved a "recall" notice in the mail about the cruise control for fire and failure issues. they are adding a fusable link where the cruise control harness connects to the brake master cylinder. if you have not had the recall performed yet you should SERIOUSLY consider getting it done, mainly so it doesnt catch fire, but "could" be the result of the failure you've been experiancing! btw, almost ALL Ford vehicles have been affected with the cruise control recall. hope this helps!

Check to see if you have any relays. Also make sure vaccuum hose is still connected.
