Car will not start at times. Although, once it is

Car will not start at times, fuel gauge only works when tank is full or empty, and starter sticks sometimes. Once car is started and warm, normally runs fine. Was advised to replace fuel sending unit and maybe starter. Was told may have duel gas pump problem. Does the advise seem accurate? Is this major/worth the investment. And, should someone with basic auto repair skills be able to fix it? The car is a 1984 automatic 318i with approx. 150K miles. Thanks!

Starter needs to be rebuilt or exchanged no doubt as far as the fuel gage just replace the tank unit and it will be fine the starting problem is probably do to the old plug wires and weak coil that i would check first my 83 bmw had ver similars issues was a good ole car just kinda contankerous at times

Testimonial: "Quick reply and helpful. Not sure if it is an urgent problem since it runs fine and doesn't die once it is warm."

Yes you can do it all if your inclined. yes its possible you got good avise. When you drop the tank be sure you do it when the fuel is as empty as possible or its awkward and heavy. Also disconnect the battery when you do the starter so as not to short out anything

The starter is the the 1st thing you need to do. Do it ASAP or one day it may not work at all.

Right now get the price and availability so your not caught off guard when you decide to do this.

When i start, the fuel gauge darts around the quarter marker then settles on empty no matter the amount of fuel.

in the dash, there is a small step down transformer, from 12 volts to about 3. Seems to not be working have it checked out.

Dash gas gauge stops showing proper gas level once it hits half a tank. Then gauge will fluctuate between empty (light will come on), full and anywhere in between but seems fine from full tank to half

If the trouble with the gauge started after you worked on it then you likely damaged or created a restriction to the movement of the sending unit. You will have to remove the tank and double-check your work.

Fuel guage doesnt work. ive tracked down all i can. Anyone got any suggestions. 1983 grand marquis 302 fuel inj

Open circuit - gauge will read full.Grounded circuit - the gauge will read empty. If it reads empty all the time - then the wire that goes to the sender is broken and/or grounded somewhere along its length to the fuel tank. run a jumper wire from bottom of the fuse box in the spot, all the way to top of sending unit on tank. disconnect old wire at both ends, and then turn on the key and observe guage. if not this, check guage itself for sticking.

Gas gauge is not reading correctly. Shows a full

the problem is caused by a defective gas gauge sending unit, this part is located inside the gas tank, you must remove the gas tank to replace it.

We just got a 1988 Porsche and filled with 1/2 tank, there was what seemed like overflow happening - Any idea what may be the problem.

fuel tank vent could be blocked by mud/pebbles etc, not letting the gas fumes escape while your adding fuel making it overflow, check underneath the car near the fuel tank .. something to start with..

Petrol gauge was working fine before a 5 week holiday. Car not used during this time. Now petrol gauge shows tank empty, even after I had filled the tank. What is wrong? How do you fix this?

sounds like the float is either got a hole in it and is full of fuel, or the whole float assembly is seized in the empty position.
was the car left for 5 weeks empty of fuel?
