98 Buick LeSabre won't start. Battery and starter are both good. What else could it be?

  • noisynanny Jan 20, 2010

I tried to start it and got nothing. I thought the battery was dead so I took it in to the parts store to have it checked...it was good. Put the battery in and tried again to start, the engine made a "thunk" and the belt started to move (jerked) but stopped immediately. Took the starter out and had it checked at the parts store...it was ok too. Haven't put the starter back in yet.

What do you mean, it won't start? Will the engine turn over when you turn the key? How do you know the battery and starter are good?

Remove the battery terminals and clean them real well and tighten them back on the posts. If you have a bad connection here, you will get the problem you described. When you are done, go ahead and put your starter back in. While you are down there, check the voltage on the thick wire supplying battery voltage to the starter make sure it is 12V. Try to start the car and get back to me.

SOURCE: 98 buick lesabre starter

The starter is on the front of the engine, towards the transmission.
There are only two bolts and two nuts that hold it in.

The nuts hold two wires to the starter, one is connected to the positive battery terminal, the other is to engage the starter solenoid.

First disconnect the positive main wire at the battery.
Then, remove the large and small nuts holding both wires onto the starter. Be careful, since the large nut is copper and easy to strip.

There is a black plastic cover that goes behind the starter between the engine and transmission and may interfere with removal. There are three screws that hold it on. There are two that are easily seen on the larger portion, and one hidden very near to the front of the starter. It might be hard to see without a flashlight.

After removing the plastic cover, you should be able to loosen and remove the two large bolts holding the starter in.

Hope this helps, if you have any questions post again!

SOURCE: 99 buick lesabre, battery ok, turn key to start, nothing

The security system (VATS/PassKey) is faulty. You can find a great write-up here: http://newrockies.ca , it was the only thing that saved my Park Avenue.

SOURCE: battery tests good & alternator

batteries can be bad right from the factory-rare, but it does happen. It needs to be load tested after a charge to see if it recovers. Then, have a test done on the alternator (free at most commercial auto parts stores)-that should rule out problems with battery, alternator, and connections. the only other thing is the ECU, for some reason, limiting the alternator output, but that should show up when the alternator is tested.

What keeps the car from cranking up the starter good in the battery good and alternator is good on a Buick Lesabre 2000

Try starting it in neutral. It may not be completely in park. Most 2000 lesabre cars have a safety feature, where after you turn the ignition on. You will hear a double beep noise and immediately try to start the engine. If not that, a fuse or starter relay. The relay will be under the hood. If that doesn't work you must have a bad connection from the ignition to the starter.

I too have a problem with my 98 buick lesabre, not starting! The battery and starter is both good! My husband thinks it could be the starter solonoid! Where is that located and could this be the problem?

Yes this could be it and it is normally attached to the side of the starter itself. I would also do an idiot check on the fuses first though.

My 1998 buick lesabre want start i replaced the starter no fuse is blowed wt could it be the car will not even turn over

If the car won't turn over and the starter is changed to a known good one, then the battery or battery connection could be the cause.

98 lesabre grinding starter

most likely your bendex wheel in the starter is not engaging the flywheel this could be due to a bad solenoid on the starter. chances are it's a bad starter, i would check to make sure all connections to starter are tight and you have atleast 11.5 -12.5 volts of current in the battery. low voltage can cause this problem as well
