I have a 90 GMC sierra and reverse doesn't work except for when 4x4 is engaged, is it safe to drive or will the tranny go out ( automatic)

yes bonedivers, my gmc has all 4 forward gears, and they work as good as new , reverse is only problem, a local mechanic told me it was the bands, but as i am low on money at the moment i cant afford to take it in to get the tranny rebuilt

Not safe to drive. Sun shell broke or stripped out. Does it have all 4 foward gears? If so you have a different problem. Still in trans though.

Testimonial: "yes all forward gears work good as new, reverse slips like im riding the klutchbut its an auto. trans, and is getting worse each time."

Sorry to hear that but I can tell you for sure that it is not the bands. That unit should be a 4L60E and it only has 1 band and it works 2 and 4th NOT reverse. Does it still slip in 4x4 just not as bad?

4wd will not engage on 2002 gmc sierra 1500

try going into reverse for 10 feet then go to drive for 10 feet that might help if not it is to the wiring to you 4x4 engage system (wires to your wheel hub)

The filter might be clogged/old and the cold makes the fluid heavy. With the 700r4 transmission its always best to let it warm up for a few minutes.

1990 GMC Sierra 4x4 1500

the connections near the front axle that activate the motor to engage the system aren't melted? That's a comon problem for that body style. If there good, sounds like it could be that motor itself. To figure out if it's you motor or transfercase, jack up the rear end, have a friend inside shift into 4 wheel drive, or try to, and put it in gear and apply some gas. If the front driveshaft is turning then it's something with the front end. If not, farther back in the system.
