a clutch can wear out in a couple hundred miles if not driven properly or abused-at 40,000 miles it is highly possible that the clutch disk is worn to the point that it needs to be replaced. You might be able to get away with driving it but avoid driving it is such a way that it slips-if you can hear the engine running 'ahead' of the car (revving faster than you are moving) get off the gas-especially in higher gears. If you do this until you can get the clutch replaced, you should be able to nurse it along for months.
Hi if your clutch is a cable operated one then it could mean the cable has snapped, if its hydraulic then the problem will be either the master or slave cylinder, all of these parts can be replaced but if its hydraulic then it can be a bit of a nightmare to replace, also if it is hydraulic then you wont know if its the master or slave cylinder that has gone without changing one of the parts, most of the time its the slave cylinder located on the gearbox but it can sometimes be the master cylinder that is located near the bulk head at the place where the clutch pedal comes through the bulk head into the bonnet.
Hi if you have the metal intake there is a torx screw adjustment behind the plastic cover for throttle cable. in = more idle rpm and out =less rpm hope this helps
believe it or not, the floormat on my 2000 Sunfire will sometimes slip forward and hold the clutch pedal down against the floor. It truly feels like a mechanical problem, but simply pull the floormat away and the pedal pops right back up!
