Have you tried the fuel pump relay, the relay coil may be overheating and dropping out. Or there is **** in the pump filter at the tank end if it has one on the lift pump end itself (i.e. in-tank filter)

1996 plymouth neon started and then died and now won't start

Go to your car and turn the key to the on position. You should hear a whine for about 2-4 seconds that is the fuel pump priming the fuel line. This sound will come from inside your gas tank, but you should hear it as you sit in the car or have somebody look under the car near the gas tank to see if you hear it. It will whine for 2-4 seconds and if you shut the key off and turn it back on, you should hear the whine again. If you don't hear anything, then it sounds like your fuel pump is out. If you do hear something then it might be ice in the gas filter or in the line somewhere.

If my pickup starts then shuts off does that mean the fuel pump is bad

This would be 1 possibility, can you hear the fuel pump whine or making a noise when you first turn on the key?
It should whine for a couple of seconds to pressurize the fule system then shut off until you try to start the engine. The best way to check is to connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail connector (looks like a tire valve stem) and the gauge screws onto this fitting. When you turn the key on you should see the pressure gauge read the pressure going to the fuel rail, when you start the engine you should see the pressure maintain pressure to keep the engine running. If not then the could mean that the fuel pressure is weak and would need replacing. Hope this helps

95 gmc 1500 4x4 will start sometimes but only runs for a few seconds. when it wont start there is no fuel in carb injectors are dry. any ideas? tried new fuel pump same thing.

do you hear the fuel pump run a few seconds when you turn the key on? did you check fuel pressure? replaced fuel pump relay? the oil pressure switch may have something to do with this.

Have a 98 gmc 5.7 truck have to prime to start truck.

Sounds to me like either your pressure regulator is bad or you have a loose fitting somewhere in the fuel line from the fuel pump to the engine. When you turn your key to the on position, you should hear the whine of the fuel pump until it builds pressure. When you shut the truck off the pressure regulator should retain the pressure for a certain amount of time but if it don't close then air is allowed into the fuel line and the fuel drains down to fuel line away from the engine. Next time you try and start the truck after it has sat for a while try turning the key on until you hear the fuel pump whine shut off, then repeat it 3-5 times and then try to start it. Basically that is running the pump enough to get the fuel back up to the injectors. Check for loose fittings in the fuel line, or cracks in the fuel line and if all that is fine then replace the regulator.

Hope that helps

1996 GMC Suburban - Quit Running While Driving, Will Not Start

Listen at the back by the fuel tank for a 1 to 2 second prime cycle whirr from the tank when turning the key to run position after it has been off for at least 10 seconds.
No noise means no running pump.
....and no noise means.....
Most likely it will need a new fuel pump....80%
Fuel pump relay 10%
Fuse or bad wiring 10%

The quick fix to get home is to crank the truck to create oil pressure to fire the pump......and while cranking WHACK the tank hard with a 2by4 or something like that....to jar the pump..... and it may start running long enough to get it somewhere to be repaired.
This works 60% of the time on a dead pump.

If you do hear a whirrr.....you most likely need a ignition module or crank or dist pickup.

1995 GMC Sierra 5.7 liter stalls and is hard starting occasionally. I have replaced fuel pump and sending unit, fuel filter and fuel pump relay. When this happens the fuel pump may whine for a few seconds...

even though parts are new they also come with defects so it sounds as if when you turn the key you hear it working and other times not at all hmmm connections are tight ? could be faulty fuel pump or relay .

1997GMC Sonoma 4x4 engine cranks but wont start

sounds like a fuel pump problem. take off gas cap and have someone sit in the truck and turn iginition key to on. (do not turn key as if you were starting but to "on only") you should hear the fuel pump engage. if you dont hear the fuel pump then check the fuel pump relay. it is located behind the glove compartment. hope this helps...

1996 GMC K1500 Pickup Starting Problem

i would try a fuel filter first. the fuel gauge going crazy is most likely the sender they go bad and eventually stop working. the bummer is you have to replace the fuel module. these aftermarket are about 200 bucks. the module comes with the pump and sender which is the next part you want to look at. gm has some issues with the harness to the fuel pump externaly. it actualy will melt and start to lose conection. i would check this by visualy inspecting the plug on top of the tank. unplug it and take a look. if it is at all disscolored replace the pump (module). the new pump comes with a replacement harness (make sure its in the box)hope this helps and good luck
