go to your local auto parts store and they should have a scanner but it sounds like eather the Throttle Position Sensor or one of the O2 (oxygen Sensors)
Hi, check the connection on your temperature sensor. If the connection is good, replace the sensor. The cost is about $11 at autozone. The sensor is located at the back of the engine, near the transmission. See pictures below. Use some water pump sealant on the threads when installing the new sensor. That slushy brown stuff is signs of a blown head gasket. Have a code scanner hooked up to find out why the light is on, it will probably show coolant temperature sensor. Just out of curiosity, check the pvc valve (if your car has one), and see if it's clogged. If it is replace it, the crank case is not getting ventilated.
