Sounds like the compressor is failing or seized (for the air con). This would put extra pressure on the system. It could be another fault with the air con system like the solenoids not opening up to allow the flow of gas in the system.

If the air compressor is bad... check the diagram under the hood for the serpentine belt. Most vehicles will have a diagram that displays the serpentine belt path along with a part number for a shorter belt to bypass the ac compressor. If you can't find the diagram, go to your local parts store and they should be able to help.
