Cut off while driving. will start back up and runs fine. it has cuttoff three times for no apparent reason. check engine light has never come on.

  • Anonymous Jan 13, 2010

There seems to be no other problem with the car. It will be running fine and then all of a sudden cut-off. It will start back up sometimes right away other times after sitting for a while.

common fault caused by immobiliser, could be a few other things. I will enter this response as a clarification request just incase there's a expert on this vehicle that might spot it as an unsolved problem

If it's running fine, I would still suggest it's immobilser/alarm system, especially as you have to wait sometimes before restart. but crankshaft or knock sensor would be a good second choice. Air meters and lambda sensors usually cause it to run rough before it dies. Check your wire connections to the battery and earth connections from the alarm system. then take it to a garage if you can't solve it. most sensors are directly tied into the ECU and should show up on a fault diagnosis

Might be a leak on your brake booster (this will most probable give you a hard brake pedal or a "sucking sound " when applying brakes) also check the vacumm pipe from the engine to the brake booster. It might have a leak, so when you press the brakes it influences the air mixture.

I have a 1998 volks beetle .. oil light has come on .. i checked oil .. says dry .. i add'd some .. then says fine.. then 10 min later says dry .. and there is no apparent leaks that i can see .. is...

If your dipstick reads dry, do NOT run the engine or drive it until you find the leak-there is no reasonable explaination for that condition, it is leaking somehow, period. If you insist on driving it, it will damage or destroy the engine in a very short time-get it checked out (have it towed), it is going to be a very expensive problem if you let it go.

does it cut out while driving?? If it cuts out while driving does the speedometer drop to zero even if the car is moving?? try shaking the key while the engine is started and the vehicle is in park...car should die?? If yes is your answer to any of these questions, its a faulty ignition switch. There is a recall for this, call your honda dealer for info and possible replacement!! hopefully this helps

Engine cuts off

Check the relays. A worn connection could cause this.
The fuel pump relay is often the culprit.
If you try twisting the relays, gently while it's running, or while you try starting it, you may find the problem.
Hope that's it.

5.9 DIESEL ENGINE CUTS OFF WHEN DRIVING

Hi

From what I can gather, the engine cuts out and then the check engine light comes on, not the other way around, check engine light and then cut out?

If you switch on the ignition but do not start the engine, you will see that the check engine light is on. It won't go out until you start the engine.

When the engine cuts out, it is just as though you have switched on the ignition without starting the engine, the key is in the exact same position, and therefor the check engine light comes on purely and simply because the engine isn't running, not because it has sensed a problem, hence you have no fault codes, its perfectly normal.

If, however, the light comes on then the engine cuts out, then the reason for the lack of codes could be a short term electrical failure. If the power to the ECM were briefly cut then the codes would be erased immediately, but this would have to be a complete failure because there is a KAM (Keep Alive Memory) wire, which supplies permanent power to the ECM if I'm not mistaken. A good candidate for a complete failure is a bad main ground cable (loose or broken).

Wiring problems a just the worst ever to trace.

Just a thought to hopefully point you in the right direction.

Very best regards

Geordie
