Starter is located on passenger side just above oil pan side of block, will take two to check starter assembly, there are two wire's that go to starter, one ( big one ) is from battery and the other ( small one ) is from ignition switch, with test light probe small wire while some one holds ignition to start you should have voltage at small wire. if you do and you also have voltage at big wire starter is bad, if you don't have voltage at small wire with ignition at start, check ignition switch, also check battery voltage and make sure terminals are clean.

Also if all voltage check out good with switch at start, hit starter with hammer some times will start, but you'll still need to replace starter.

Need to know where the starter is located

Not knowing what model or year your vehicle is makes it hard to give an exact answer but the starter will be at the rear (usually the passenger side) where it can connect with the flywheel or starter ring when engaged. You can also fallow the large positive battery cable from either the starter solenoid or battery to locate the starter.

Replaced the starter but while the engine is on the starter wont disengage. Burnt up 2 starters doing this! I've heard it may need to Shimmed, or that the battery cables may need replaced... Anyone know???

Your Starter Relay, located in the Relay/Fuse Box/Panel is sticking and causing the Starter "Run-On".
Locate the Starter Relay in the Relay/Fuse Box/Panel.
The identification and location of the Relays/Fuses should be located in your Owners Manual, or on the inside rear Cover.
There are usually Relays in the Box/Panel which are the same Type (size and shape). Switch out the suspected bad Starter Relay with another non-engine Relay that is KNOWN to work.
Recheck the operations of both these functions.
If the Starter is not still experiencing "Run-On" and the other function is now malfunctioning. The suspected Relay is bad and needs to be replaced.

Where is thestarter located on a 2003 Mercedes Benz E320?

You would need to get a repair manual for a schematic to know where the starter motor is located. In truth, replacement is not very complicated--you simply unbolt the old unit and bolt in a new replacement unit. But, you may have to disassemble other components to reach the starter motor. It is likely more costly to have your starter motor repaired. I suggest getting a new one or refurbished. Some places will have a "core charge", whereby you get that money refunded when you send them your old starter. In the end, it is cheaper and easier than getting your starter motor fixed. Good luck.
