Solonoid vs. Starter?

When I turned the ignition, I got a "Poof" and the car no longer turns over. The battery and cables are fine. I believe either solonoid or starter. How can I tell? 2001 Ford Ranger 3.0

Yes. No longer a poof. Just a click click now

What do you mean by a "poof"? Is it a sound and does it do it each time you try to start it?

Turn on the dome light in your truck and crank the engine. If the light goes out, the battery is probably dead. If the light stays bright, it's either the connection or your starter or solenoid. The click (probably the solenoid engaging the gear to the flywheel) would lead me to believe the solenoid is working but the starter isn't turning. That year should have the two in one unit and since you have to replace one or the other, you could pull the whole assembly and and use a pair of jumper cables to test it.

I have a 87 f150 4x4 wont start with the key has new starter, solonoid switch and new ignition switch but it starts fine when I jump the solonoid

If you are saying that the vehicle will turn over only when jump started and nothing when not connected to another vehicle then I would check the earth connection from battery!

I have a 1993 chev silverado that wont start.I've replaced the ignition switch on the steering column and also replaced the starter. It does make a clicking noise at the starter when I turn the key.I'm not...

you need to do a check at the battery terminals and make sure they are clean and no corrosion and tight and at the starter motor, then with a test lighe make sure that you have a feed at the trigger wire on the starter motor if you have then disconect the main live from the battery and conect the main cable going to the starter motor to the main sable on the solonoid mounted on the starter motor half inch af once this is done then, MAKE SURE ITE CAR IS IN NUETERAL IGNITION OFF and then put the pos cable to the pos terminal of the battery and if it turns over then its the solonoid thats at falt

My positve battery cabel was loose, when i tighten it, the starter was trying to tun over with out the key in the ignition.

When you tightened the battery connection you may have twisted the cable on the starter and shorted it to the solonoid lead causing the starter to engage . Check the connections on the starter and make sure there are not touching each other. Hope this helps.

Turn ignition and nothing, new starter new battery

ignition switch, in steering column, check all fuses ! does starter have a new solonoid ? it should. can't do one and not the other. although stranger things have happened. check all wire connections, tight enough ? right location, are battery terminals tight, a parts store clerk forgot to tighten them on , this happened to my daughter. Is it all the way in park, or neutral, the gear shift lever ? starter or solonoid faulty ! starter motor pinion jammed into flywheel !

I have a 1988 Jeep Cherokee. The ignition will not turn over but the lights and radio still work so I know it's not the battery but it still won't start. What could the problem be?

Little confused there

The Starter Turns over the engine
Then the ignition comes into play

Any lights etc means nothing, as they only use
a small amount of current, the guys you can't see,
that do all the work

The battery may be dead
If not then the starter solenoid
If not then the starter

Battery seems fine good lights on dash when turned on but will not turn engine over it won`t even try

There are several possibilities for you to investigate. When the key is in the start position do you should hear a click from the starter solonoid? If so then you know that power is getting to the starter solonoid which eliminates a bad ignition switch. In that case you may have a bad starter. If you hear no click then you must get a test light and use it to see if power is getting to the starter solonoid. Ground the light and place the tip on the energizer wire to the solonoid. When an assistant turns the key to the start position the test light should light. This tells you power is where it should be and the solonoid is not working. If there is no power there then you must suspect a bad ignition switch or a bad wire in between the switch and the starter. Hope this helps.

Won't crank. No sound from starter.Starter tested ok. Battery new.Dash lights light up.Fuses not blown. 1992 Toyota Camry XLE V6 automatic

Battery cables off the starter ,starter relay and ignition switch. these are the remaining items in the starting system for no crank and no start.
Get Shop manual and do the appropriate testing for each.

Intermitent start

A little clarification: the starter relay and starter solenoid are the same piece of equipment -- just different names for the same device.
