No heat, gauge goes up and down. coolant was flushed and changed the thermostat.

Sounds like you still have air in the system. Is there a little bleed valve on top of your thermosatat housing? That is for getting air out. If it doesn't have one: take radiator cap off, turn heater to full hot (not the blower motor, keep that off), start car and let it reach normal operating temperature. When thermostat opens, add coolant as necessary to radiator and to overflow tank. Replace cap on radiator. Good luck.

Need to replace thermostat but am unsure about how antifreeze goes back in after being drained and how the the engine refills the raditor

You refill the engine coolant by filling the overflow reservoir/pressure tank.Start the vehicle and keep filling until it reaches the full mark, then allow the engine to get to operating temp of 190 degrees and then top off the coolant. There is no bleeders for this engine unless you have a duramax then there is a bleeder on top of thermosatat housing that you remove with the engine off and fill the coolant until it comes out of the bleed hole.Start the duramax engine and let warm to operating temp. You may need to hold the engine speed at 2000 rpm to get the diesel to operating temp.

Where is the thermostat

It should be at the front of the engine where the upper radiator hose is attached to the engine. The radiator hose will be attached to the thermostat housing with a hose clamp. The thermostat housing should have two bolts holding it in place. Remove the gbolts(engine cold) and raise the housing up, The thermostat will be underneath. Make sure the new thermostat is facing the right way when you install it, Don't forget the gasket. Bolt the housing back in place and install the radiator hose and clamp. Replenish any coolant that was lost to bring the coolant level back up. Run the engine long enough for it to warm up. Check for leaks, monitor the temperature guage to make sure it reaches normal temp without overhearing, and make sure the heater is blowing warm air.

I cant find where the thermostat goes on 1994 nissan d21 2.4 motor

remove the air cleaner and air duct assembly then remove the radiator hose then the water inlet housing remove the thermostat from the housing make sure you disconnect the battery ground and drain the engine and radiator coolant. So its located behind the water inlet housing attached to the radiator hose

Could not find thermostat on 1996 nissan pick up. removed top hose found nothing.

Where the top radiator hose attaches to the engine, there should be 2 or 3 bolts to remove to take the hose connection off the engine. The thermostat goes in between the hose connection and the engine. If there isn't a thermostat there then I would guess that it was removed and driven without a thermostat.

Coolant Change 92 Nis PU

There is a small bypass hose for the thermostat. Are you asking how to do a complete flush? If you want to make sure you get all the coolant out there is a 14mm drain plug on the left side of the engine block that will allow all the coolant to drain. It is tough to get to without the right tools. Make sure you remove the small bleeder screw on the thermostat housing when refilling so all the air is purged from the system.
