Speedometer and Tachometer intermittent, work properly or do not work at all. Owned vehicle since special ordered from factory at end of model year, purchased the full OEM Toyota manuals before ordering the vehicle and have considerable engineering troubleshooting and design experience. Took entire instrument cluster module apart once. Did not see any obvious basis for the intermittent behavior during that disassembly but was not prepared at that time to perform relevant electronic troubleshooting. Location of the problem was not found without troubleshooting the electronics, though interestingly the cluster worked flawlessly for several weeks thereafter, even though the speedometer and tachometer had neither been working for several weeks prior to my disassembly; apparently I made enough difference in whatever detail of assembly to temporarily stop the malfunction, even though I did not recognize what that was. While several vendors online promote their repair services for this problem, some quite believable, given cash flow issues and time, I am not willing to send the cluster to someone else to modify/repair.

    Both the speedometer and tachometer have a mechanical stop for the needles. The stop is located behind the display board.



    The stop and needle contact point tend to develop a sticky residue which mechanically prevents the needle from rising above zero. At the behavior would indicate, the needles independently of one another, tend to stick at zero, yet intermittently, while driving will resume normal reading.



    Disassembling the instrument cluster and carefully cleaning the stop and needle contact point with some solvent on a bent cotton swab or pipe cleaner should solve the problem. Just be careful not to break any of the delicate parts.



    This problem and solution were first posted by users on the ClubLexus forums, but the brief discussion is difficult to locate.





    If able, I will post a photo or short video of the problem and solution.

Possible fault according to your input could be dry points or fault connectivity within the cluster. Try to look for dry solder joints on the sensors which give the input, or clean the connectors using dirt cleaners. As the condition improved after reassembly it cannot be a failure but a fault joint in the electronics. I request you take your time to redo the earlier work with more patience, use a lens to detect any loose connection, if possible use a multimeter to test the continutiy.Good Luck.

You should look for a qualified repair shop , unless you know how to test automotive electrical circuits . Battery drain or parasitic draw on the battery is not easy to find if not familiar with automotive electrical testing . Also having wiring diagrams an service repair info . Does the truck run an drive ok ? The speedo an tach not working could be a problem inside the instrument cluster or VSS - vehicle speed sensor for the speedometer .
Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
On vehicles equipped with 4-wheel anti-lock brake systems (4WABS), the vehicle speed signal is generated by the rear anti-lock brake sensor and sent to the 4WABS module. The 4WABS module sends the vehicle speed signal via circuit 679 (GY/BK) to all systems that require a vehicle speed signal input. Vehicles equipped with rear anti-lock brakes (RABS) generate a vehicle speed signal from the rear axle speed sensor. The generic electronic module (GEM) receives this signal (VSS_GEM) for internal use and then distributes it to the appropriate other users (i.e., the powertrain control module [PCM], speed control module, and speedometer).
Speedometer
The electronic speedometer (17255) receives a speed signal from the 4WABS module (if equipped with 4WABS) or the generic electronic module (GEM)/central timer module (CTM) (if equipped with RABS).

Tachometer
Gasoline vehicles are equipped with a 6,000 rpm tachometer and diesel vehicles are equipped with a 4,500 rpm tachometer. The tachometer is hardwired to the PCM through circuit 648 (WH/PK).

This is a result of either a bad solder job at the factory or just bad solder. You can remove your gage cluster and remove and resolder the joints at the back of the 2 indicators. there are several sites on the internet that have specific instructions.

Sppeedometer works intermittantly

If the vehicle speed sensor was the cause you would have a check engine light and the transmission would have sifting issues into overdrive, I would think you just have a failing tachometer stepper motor (tiny DC motor) that drives the needle..

Tachometer does not work and speedometer is intermittent

Since the speedometer comes off the transmission and the tachometer comes off the ignition, they are totally separate except for the ground circuit. So check the dash ground cable, or add another one.

Condition

Some customers of all 2003-2004 model year and certain U.S. 2005 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles have reported that one or more of the instrument panel (IP) cluster gauges stick, flutter, or become inoperative. This may cause inaccurate readings, including the speedometer and fuel gauge. Special Coverage Adjustment This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 7 years or 70,000 miles (110,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.

Dealers are to replace the instrument panel cluster after the condition has been verified. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.

For verified failures between 70,001 miles (110,001 km) and 80,000 miles (130,000 km) on U.S. vehicles, dealers are to provide the customer with an instrument panel cluster (IPC) only. Any additional costs, including labor to replace the instrument panel cluster, will be the responsibility of the customer. Dealers are responsible for the return of the customer's IPC back to the Electronic Service Center.

For vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after September 28, 2007 for 2003-2004 model year vehicles, and March 23, 2009 for 2005 model year vehicles, are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to September 28, 2007 for 2003-2004 model year vehicles, or March 23, 2009 for 2005 model year vehicles, must be submitted to the Service Contract provider.

My 1984 toyota corolla needs a new speedometer cable installed.

Removal & Installation The slightest bind in the speedometer cable can cause unpredictable behavior in the cruise control system. If the cruise control exhibits intermittent surging or loss of set speed symptoms, check the speedometer cable first
  1. Follow the appropriate procedure given previously for removal of the instrument cluster. The cluster need not be fully removed, but only loosened to the point of being able to disconnect the speedometer cable.
  2. Disconnect the speedometer cable and check that any retaining clamps or clips between the dash and the firewall are released.
  3. Safely raise the vehicle and support it on jackstands.
  4. Disconnect the cable fitting at the transmission or transaxle and lift the cable and case away from the transmission or transaxle.
  5. Follow the cable back to the firewall, releasing any clips or retainers.
  6. From inside the vehicle, work the speedometer cable through the grommet in the firewall into the engine compartment. It may be necessary to pop the grommet out of the firewall and transfer it to the new cable.
  7. When reinstalling, track the new cable into position, remembering to attach the grommet to the firewall securely. Make absolutely certain that the cable is not kinked, or routed near hot or moving parts. All curves in the cable should be very gentle and not located near the ends. Note the speedometer cable inside the housing must be lubricated with the proper lubricant before installing it to the vehicle.
  8. Attach any retaining clips, brackets or retainers, beginning from the middle of the cable and working towards each end.
  9. Attach the cable to the transmission or transaxle. Remember that the cable has a formed, square end on it; this shaped end must fit into a matching hole in the transmission or transaxle mount. Don't try to force the cable collar (screw fitting) into place if the cable isn't seated properly.
  10. Inside the vehicle, hold the other end of the cable with your fingers or a pair of tapered-nose pliers. Gently attempt to turn the cable; if it's properly seated at the other end, the cable will NOT turn more than about 1/4 turn. If the cable turns freely, the other end is not correctly seated.
  11. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  12. Attach the speedometer cable to the instrument cluster, again paying close attention to the fit of the square-cut end into the square hole. Don't force the cable retainer.
  13. Reinstall the instrument cluster following procedures outlined previously. Road test the vehicle for proper operation.

The tachometer on my 92 Honda Prelude Si works but the factory speedometer isn't whatsoever.

Its probably your speed sensor mounted on the back side of your transmission on top of the final drive gear. Its the sensor/plug located just under the shift linkage. Make sure its bolted down tight and check for any loose connections.

Tachometer and speedometer

The speedometer is a mechanically driven gauge so you need to check the cable is pushed in at the back. The tachometers on several model Charades are known to act up. There has been varying success by resoldering dry joints on the cluster PCB and the gauge itself.
