Not in modern cars they are designed to run on unleaded. 87 or higher is referring to the octane level in the fuel. 87 is low we use 95 to 97 in the uk. The higher the octane the greater the bang ie more power but somecars might want their timing adjusting if you get pinking noises.
The lead in fuel lubricates the engine so it is good but not environmentally friendly. Old cars also needed the timing adjusting for this and some times new valves but most cars after the 80's should be ok.
So in short put whatever petrol/gas you want in
It aint great but if not done often your car wont complain
