I have a 91 xj auto trans and 4.0...it sometimes ides down to about 250rpm then back upto 1100 or so then back down and so on...but if i touch the gas in park it stops this idle issue and most of the time levels out..the same issue is related to another issue..when in drive sometimes it will (WHEN GIVING IT GAS)fall on its face then if i let off the gas it will go just fine ..until i press on the peadel again...so i have to ease into the trottle..also it is getting bad gas milage ( about 12.5 to 14.3mpg) and is sometimes hard to start...keep in mind all of this was a sudden change..it just started all of these behaviors one day...i have replaced the feul pump and sock and filter as well as the pressure regulator..all plugs and wires .cap and rotor

You have to go back over the reinstall of the trans. All you did.
You put the problem in the vehicle.
I own a trans shop years ago, and saw this happen, way too many times.
Mistakes my friend, you have to remember everything going out and going back.
You better find out how to adjust the throttle control, before you ruin the trans.
Sorry,I have been away from the business awhile and can't help, without being there.
You may have trans problems. The guy that sold you the car knew it. It will cost more than the car is worth if the trans is bad. I wouild call the person you bought it from and explain it has trans problems and what the best course of action is.
It's right next to the air filter and behind the radiator fan and to the right of the oil dipstick. The transmissions is black and the oils is yellow. If it's a manual, there's no dipstick there. If not check close to the forewall towards the back of the engine.
