Open the rear tailgate and remove the two screws that hold the tail lamp assembly in place. Now there are two alignment pins that hold the lamp in place, you must use a screwdriver or other flat device and lightly pry the lamp your working on. If you are removing the rear left (driver side) then pry back outward to the left. Alternately, if you are removing the right rear tail light, pry outward to the right. Do not try and pull directly back. The pins will prevent the light from coming out. You have to pull left or right, depending on the light your removing. Good luck.

I cant seem to find out how to remove the tail light to replace the bulb. what am i missing?

Typically, the entire tail light assembly has to be released from the inside. So you have to remove trim, inside, for access, usually 3 or 4 thumbscrews get released and the whole thing comes out. This set up is much more watertight than the older method of lense removal.

We have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo. We have changed bulbs, replaced a socket, and the drivers side tail light dosen't work. The brake light, turn signal, and back up lights do. Only the left tail...

Check the fuses as well as the wiring near the tail light.

If all seems good, get a cheap multimeter and check the voltage in the wires that go to the tail light (red probe on one wire and black probe on the other). If you get a reading about 12 Volts (or -12 depending on which wires the black and red are on) the problem is the tail light or bulb itself.

Change out a taillight

You want to change the tail light bulb?

The process for replacing tail light bulbs is the same in all models. If you have a burnt-out tail light bulb, you may need to replace the brake light, the reverse light or the turn signal. The procedure to replace each of the bulbs is the same.

    Instructions

    1. Open the Hummer's rear swing gate. This will expose the edge of the vehicle's tail light assembly. You'll see two small Phillips head screws that hold the tail light assembly in place. Put on your gloves.

    2. Remove the two screws from the tail light assembly. Pull the tail light out and inspect the back for two bulbs. The top bulb is the brake light and turn signal. The bottom bulb is the reverse bulb. Determine which bulb you need to replace.

3Rotate the bulb's socket counterclockwise to disconnect it. Unplug the bulb from its socket.

4Push the replacement bulb into its socket firmly. Insert the socket back into the tail light. Turn it clockwise to secure it in place.

5Place the tail light into its cradle. Hold it with one hand and replace the Phillips head screws with the other.

How do you change the outside tail and brake light in the rear of a 1997 Mercury grand marquis? Tail light assembly seems sealed. Is there a trick to changing the bulbs or is this a major endeavor?

Move trunk interior inside fenderwell. There are 4 retaining nuts that hold the outer light assy. Remove those nuts and pull assy straight out so as not to damage plastic studs. Rotate bulb socket counterclockwise and and replace with correct bulb

Right brake light out; tail light works fine

most rear tail lights and turn/stop lights are the same dual filiment bulb. it is possible for your tail light to work and your brake light not to and still have a bad bulb. I would check the bulb first, your brake light works on the left yes? this would mean that the fuse is fine
