3.8L '97 Mercury Cougar XR7 Boston LE w/idle surging

She starts up just fine at anytime of the day or night, runs fine anywhere above idle, it's just at idle where she surges; in or out of gear even when I come to a stop & reach idle it'll surge.

The surges range between 700rpm to 1200rpm.

I've replaced the TPS, IAC, PCV, all filters oil & air, oil change all to no avail. Run B-12 Chemtool in gas to flush out any deposits in the injectors.

Any & all response and/or suggestions welcome.

Thanx in advance

Try cleaning the throttlebody if that doesn't help unplug the mass air flow sensor and see if it smooths out

Why when i start my 1996 mercury cougar xr7 it idles down and shut off?

Could be a faulty idle air control valve, or dirty throttle body.
The computer uses the valve to control idle speed.

I have a 1997 mercury cougar starts up it surges up and down in drive it cuts off

You will need to have the Ford dealer run an active engine running test with a scan tool to see what fault shows up.

My 97 Cougar idles at about 1500 RPM at a stop and will accelerate to 40mph without applying the accelerator? Seems to bea problem at higher speeds too. What could be causing this?

Could be a faulty IAC (Idle Air Control) motor. Get this checked out because it will wear out your brakes quick, not to mention fuel mileage, Good luck, Gary

97 cougar 3.8l no start until fan and fuel pump shut off

Same car, same problem. Finally fixed by changing out PCM (computer module behind passenger side kick panel). Car runs much better too.

Usually with the AC on, the idle will slow down, but your case, maybe you set the idle too fast, try set your idle slow down a little bit see if it is working.
