take it in to an auto transmission specialist shop for a proper diagnosis there is a band piston in a housing that has a habit of cracking and the band will not work effectively and from your description , that is indicated
The neddle is attached to the column via a thin metal wire and spring which then clips to the edge. Remove the trim above the column and look for the clip attached to the wire and a warn spot on the column and reattach it. :)
That does sound like a linkage adjustment problem.
If that does not work, I'd try a fluid change and filter. But your diagnostics with pulling on the gear shifter is a pretty good indication of a linkage problem.
Not a lot to go on here! But, Sounds like this has an auto trans? If it has, get a socket on the front crankshaft pulley nut, turn the engine just a bit back an forth. If you hear a metal to metal 'clunking', then remove the inspection cover at the front bottom of the trans. Now move the flywheel with a screwdriver, you will find that the flex-plate is loose or broken. If its a manual trans, None of this applies! Frankster016
