1986 Nova: engine stops while standing and at low RPM. OK before I got rear ended. Next start up: would not idle without revving. Next startup: OK but died while driving home; kick started without any problem but needed continued revving. Mechanic advised bad solenoid connection and charged $104.00.. Although carburator performance much better than ever, still dies at intersections without revving. 20 degree morning start ups OK and 10 minute standing warm up idle OK. But, 5 to 10 minutes of running and stops again. Any suggestions?

Is the choke opening up all the way after it warms completly up ? and have you checked the fuel lines to the gas tank they might have got pinched in wreck.

Feb 1, 2012 - My Car 58 S3, as of last night decided to start revving whilst on idle, I found a clip ... I can do or is it going to be a trip to audi for them to pull my pants down! ... Lots of members all over the UK have VCDS, have a look at the VCDS .....and as the engine warms up it'll auto-rev to 1000rpm every time i sit at idle.

It wasn't the oil level. Mine started ticking around 14K and it still ticks like crazy at 168K when the engine is warmed up and cruising. Goes away under moderate acceleration.
There is a thermostatic flapper valve in the exhaust manifold that is likely the source of the ticking when the engine is warm.
Have the alternator tested. You are providing a low charge to the battery when you jump it and when taking it above 2K RPM requires more amperage resulting in the engine dying and the rough idle
code 16 is described as follows
rpm too low during self-test (lean fuel test)
or
idle speed control (ISC)
rpm out of self test specification
or
electronic distributorless ignition fault refers to a signal not recieved
or
exhaust gas oxygen sensor - signal voltage indicates rich during engine run self test
What i would check is the egr valve to see if it is stuck open. that would make it run like ****.
Does it idle ok or does it run rough. I mean without revving it with the pedal? Have also seen these melt exhaust valves.
So check that and let me know what you find.
