VW Polo 1.2 2002, a friend gave me a car who's just moved abroad. The car has been sitting off the road for 6 months and wouldn't start so i towed it home and can't fathom what's wrong with it. I charged the battery and it's good and holding charge but nothing will come on, hazards, internal lights or instrument panel and nothing's turning over. I checked all the fuses are ok. What should i do next??

Polo Coupe 1043,1992, Will not start, can be bumped started, sometimes!!, theres a strange clicking noise from under the air box, when the ignition is on and sometimes the oil pressure light comes on when the car gets upto temperature, then I lose all power and then the engine cuts out. I've recently changed the dizzy cap, rotor arm and battery, all the leads are new ish along with the spark plugs. The previous owner has changed the head and done all that, leaving much of the engine loom unlagged and bare. Could this cause a problem on some of the electrical systems?

This is a common occurance in vw's.
In order to turn off the airbag light you need to have a scan tool hooked up to your car because the airbag detected a fault of some sort, or it could be a faulty component in the airbag system itself.

Yes, i removed the battery completely, cleaned the terminals then charged the battery (which is only 4 years old). I did try jump starting the car before towing it, i left the jump leads attached for about 10 mins with the hope it might kick into life and still nothing came on during that time. This one's a mystery?
Thanks for the advice, i was hoping it'd be something relatively simple that i could solve myself, but clearly it's gonna be quite involved trying to find the fault. I suppose the next best step is get it to a garage and plug it into a computer to get a diagnostic print-out? Do you know how expensive that would be?
In reply to your last comment, you would need to contact a few businesses in your area and ask them. In your position I would be getting the car to a reputable auto electrical specialist to look over it in the first instance. You may be able to locate one with a mobile business. If the battery is good you should be getting power through to the lights and other functions. A competent auto electrician should be able to run a few tests and track down the problem or problems for you. Cheers Sean
It's not really surprising because this model has a bad reputation for all manner of difficult or impossible to locate electrical problems and many other significant faults. If you keep the car I'm afraid you will be up for some expensive failures to rectify. I very much doubt the problem at hand just occurred when the battery discharged during storage. Obviously, as a first step, all cables and major wiring connections now need to be checked if no systems whatsoever will work with a fresh battery connected up. However in my view it is impossible for anyone to identify the problem, or likely multiple faults with this vehicle, without physically testing the car and having some information on it's faults history. 2 questions Did you fully remove both cables from the battery before you re-charged the battery in the vehicle? The battery in the vehicle may still be faulty. Have you yet tried jump starting the car from another battery and checking whether lighting and other auxiliary functions will operate on the vehicle when another fully charged battery is connected to the vehicle?
