All wheel drive jeep grand cherokee stutters when turning

I have a 2002 jeep grand cherokee overland that when I turn especially sharp turns it binds up and stutters. It feels like if I had oversized tires and they were catching on the fender well...but i don't. I just replaced the rotors because I knew they were warped and I thought that might be causing it... it was more of a hope. I am a pretty decent mechanic and I assume that it is something to do with the power steering seems how it is an all wheel drive vehicle. Another thing is if i turn really slow it feels like the u-joint on the axles is binding up then popping. I and pretty much just wondering how to go about troubleshooting and fixing this problem...I personally think that it is something with that U-joint or maybe the power steering set-up. If someone could point me in a direction on how to solve this it would be greatly appreciated...

You are correct about the joint binding. Generally though unless it is really bad, they just run dry and bind making any external observation pretty much invalid. You really should try and figure out which side is binding and remove that axle and try to move the joint by hand. Very easy to tell if it's bad then.

You are correct about the u-joints in the front axles binding up. this happends alot on the all wheel drive suv.the stearing is bindin up because of the axles. to fix this problem just replace the bad axle. i personaly replace both at the same time just to save myself a headache dowwn the road

Grind noise when turning hard forward or reverse

Hi ****,

I have an older Cherokee Laredo and it does the same thing. On models like ours equipped with on the fly 4WD, the hubs are permanently locked. Whether engaged or not, the front wheels are connected to the rest of the drive train though U-Joints which are spinning with the wheels. On a hard turn, they can come close to binding. That's what you're feeling.

Go easy on the bat-turns. If you can't, make sure they're lubed good.

Enjoy

Specs on 2002 jeep grand cherokee alloy wheels R16

the tires & rims that come with your vehicle are designed to meet all the specs of your vehicle. When you change sizes and styles, you then need to get the computer re programmed with the tire changes you have made. It affects your speedometer, your transfer case, your fuel (mpg) and the performance of the engine to the wheals. Also you can damage your transmission and rear end. So my advise is to buy a high end tire that meets origional specs. Look at the Toyo's they are great tires, great performance and no alterations are needed. Pluss they look cool as hell so try that

check this site out and call them, they have better deals on the phone and have fricking great prices on tires.

Let me know how it goes.

1995 jeep grand cherokee right rear axle bind in sharp turn

If you have a positraction rear differential, the clutches may be sticking. If so, change lube and use an additive for posi rears. After changing lube, go in a parking lot and make a series of tight turns in both directions to get plates to separate and resume normal function. Before changing lube check to make sure it is full and that no suspension components in the rear are broken or loose that could cause rear to move and drag one wheel when turning.
