What you want/need is a Factory Service Manual for the '87 Ramcharger, it covers each transmission in depth.
Which, if i remember correctly, there were 4 transmissions available in 1987. The Torqueflite 727 3-Speed Automatic (Found in 2WD and 4WD Ramchargers), the 904 Torqueflite 3-Speed Auto (2WD only), the New Process 435 4-Speed Manual Transmission (2WD & 4WD) and the Chrysler A833 4-Speed Manual (2WD only)
this has a fairly easy fix. that vehicle has several belts as it does not have a serpentine belt it requires 2-3 depending on features. call the local parts store and request the belts for all your accessories,, you will NEED alternator, water pump /fan belt. as these belts fit from the crank to the accessory there is not defined path, for example from the crank to the alternator. also you will need 2 belts for the A/C compressor, as i remember it.
Yes, have someone drain all fluid and change trans. fluid and clean trans. filter screen its probably over 50% plugged. i had same problem. wasn't shifting properly and sometimes wouldn't shift into high gear causing loss of fuel mileage on highway and running at higher rpm then it should The filter is metal i believe and can be cleaned out. whatever the shop recomends. anyway took care of the problem. That was at Tires Plus for me.

Disconnect the battery negative terminal. Remove the one large and one small wires from the starter. Starter is secured to transmission with one bolt and one nut/lockwasher. I think they are 9/16" fasteners.
