D4 is a transmission problem. It wouldn't cause the car not to start. If you don't hear the pump coming on when the key is turned on, Most likely the pump died. Could be the fuse or wiring also. Check grounds. Both could be a bad ground.
These lights where turned on by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) to alert you to the fact a fault has occurred in the transmissions electronic shift controls, it can also indicate a mechanical fault. It sounds like you may have a electric shift solenoid problem. To confirm what the problem is that turned on the lights you must have the TCM scanned with a special system scan tool, it will pull fault codes from the TCM's memory.
if the D4 is drive like as in P R N (D) D 1 then the car thinks you are in gear the netrual safty switch is not working try shifting the shifter the car will only start in park or nutral if you get it to light up the P or N be carefull KEEP YOUR FOOT ON THE BREAK when you try to start the car cause the car maybe still in gear if it is malfuntioning
It's the neutral safety switch. Have your mechanic adjust it, or replace it if it's bad. For now try starting it in neutral instead of park or even try pushing the shifter up all the way (in park) while you turn the key.
The transmission control unit has gone bad, a very common problem. There is a capacitor in the TCU that goes bad and cause a short on the board. Do not get a used one, they are all bad. A number of people sell rebuilts on Ebay. The TCU is under the Front passengers feet, pull back the carpet and you'll see both the PCM and TCU.
