With the truck not running. turn the key on. move your gear selector. do you hear the normal clicking as you move through the gears. if so you park pin is the problem and you need a trans shop. if not it is possible you linkage came off. out side the trans or nside. if inside the trans you have to drop the pan and see if the parts are laying in the bottom and bolt back up. if not laying theere again take to a trans shop. if out side the trns just repair the faulty part. sometimes the little boss o the side of threans breaks off the the linkgae will not move the gears in the trans but will move in the cab.

Chevy silverado gear shift want park

Will it go into any gears closer to park ? did you try turning steering wheel , next I would look under at tranny linkage to see if there is something stopping it. that will require 2 people 1 in truck and 1 underneath.

Gear shifter will not go in park. shows in reverse but is actaully in park. all are off by 1.. R=park, N= reverse, D-= neautral, etc

check that the selector on the side of the tranny is tight and properly adjusted. Re adjust so that gear selected lines up with lights

I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 36k miles. This morning I got stuck in the snow and was going from to reverse to drive numerous times trying to get out.The transmission light came on.The level of...

There is a recall on your tranny take it to a Jeep dealer and tell them you waant the tranny recall done ours did the same thing, there is some seal that goes bad.

Also, I quote this comments form other owners with this problem:
Our 2005 grand cherokee had tranny poblems at 30,000 mi. It was a bearing in the trans. They rebuilt it under warranty. the symptoms: when you shift from park to drive and step on the gas there was a delay and it would bang onto gear. They said this was a problem on a lot of Laredos. Now at 50,000 more tranny problems. not shifting right, the engine light is on and it lights up around all of the tranny indicators on the dash PRND will all be lit up. After several trips to the dealer it is the Trans Control module or TCM at a cost of 400.00 and of course not covered in the 70,000 mi warranty.

Them, I suggtes scanned the TCM for any stored codes there.

Good luck.

the rod you mentioned is called linkage, yes it's posible, snow may have jammed up under the car and is stopping it from properly engageing, or the grinding could be internal in the transmition, jack the car up, put jack stands under the frame, block the tiers, and take a real good look at were the linckage conects to the tranny, good luck

Car wont move after warmed up

Stuck in snow, if you spin the tires for a prolonged amount of time you can overheat the transmission and damage it internally. Without seeing it, my best guess is that's what happened!
