Attached below is diagram illustrating how to hardwire a brake controller into any vehicle. Your Durango should have a blue controller plug that is installed at the factory and that is located under the dash to the left of the steering column. If you have this plug, you would be able to purchase a harness that will mate with that plug and would take a lot of the guess work out. how to hook up a brake controller for towing - 4f1c91b.jpg

How do you find out if you have the wires for a tow package? Trying to hook up a trailer with electrical brakes.

The wires would be secured under the rear of the truck. However trailer wiring is only for trailer lighting. Electric trailer brakes require a trailer brake controller.

1995 jeep cherokee 4wheel drive my right back has brake fluid spilling all out it all over rim i just had it towed AA the guy towed it 1 block and then called for a flat bed truck do you think something...

I would say if it did not leak before the tow that they definitely did something to it during the tow. They probably hooked a hook around the rear end and tore the brake line. If you have any more questions about this feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer them.

How do you install a brake controler for a towing package?

Alot of these trucks have the wiring hook up under the dash or at rear bumper area where you can just plug the wire harness from controler to it, but if not they are simple to wire and then you must level by following the instructions, you would wire it to power and ground then one wire to brake switch and the last wire goes to tow connector for electric brake on the trailer. for more help google how to install brake controller there you will find wiring diagrams and videos.

Towing and alligment problem, relation

Most likely the tow company hooked up the chains wrong when towing your car. Was this a flatbed tow truck or the two wheel dolly that only lifts up the front of your car? If the tow truck was a flatbed then when the car was pulled onto it the chains were probably hooked up wrong and a lower control arm got bent which would create your car to pull when driving. If it was a dolly type and the e-brake was left on then one of your tires has a flat spot and could be creating a radial pull. Take the vehicle to a repair shop that does free alignment checks and ask them to inspect the suspension for damage/ bent parts that could have been created by a tow chain.

Brake controller not communicating w/ 7 pin connector

what type controller did you install? Is this a camper or trailer? Is the controller hydraulic plumbed into master cylyder? Important to know how to adjust rheostat for sensitivity. If set at minimum the system is basically on the edge of not sending any signal to towed unit. The intructions should explain how to make this adjustment. If set too sensitive trailer brakes will lock up before the tow vehcle starts to brake. Controller should be set so trailer starts braking just befor the tow vehcle. If not the trailer will tax the tow vehicle brakes by pushing. Its set right when you feel the combination stretching out. trailer first then tow vehcle. Good luck and remember, if truck brakes first and too hard you risk a jacknife. All light voltages should be system voltage. Brake voltage is variable depending on setting on controller. Understand your breakaway brakes and how they work. breakaway breaks require an auxillary battery. Again, good luck and you know where to find me if I can be of anymore help.

Tow plug

I take it the blinkers and brake lights work ok when not hooked up to the trailer? If yes, then the wiring to the tow hitch is not hooked up correctly. How many wires to trailer pig tail connection? U can have up to 7 depending on what you tow. Check to make sure these wires are hooked up from the truck to tow plug correctly: 7 wired---
brown-Rt turn and brake light, yellow-backup, white-ground, blue-electric brake, green-tail running lights, black-battery charger, red-left turn signal and brake light. Let me know if u have something other than 7 wire, I'll get the wiring color and source info for u.
