2000 Mercury Mountaineer 5.0. I replaced the serpentine belt on it. Now it won't start, it sounds like something is dragging. Could the belt be too tight? If it is, what do I do please?

Question edited for clarity and typos.
Question moved to category.

Unlikely. Did you disconnect the battery? That would cause the anti theft system to need resetting.

Is the belt routing correct? Videos on changing and tensioning the belt.

Need help in routing the serpentine belt on 1997 Cougar, 4.0 motor w/air cond

Here is the link that will show you the diagram on how to route your belt. All you need to do is to click the link, select the year of your car, then the make, then the model, and the engine size. Once you have done that there are three blue links, select the third one on the right which will read routing, and then you will see the diagram.
