I have a 2000 ford escort zx2 and the shifter won't engage unless I use the override button.What is causing my shifter not to work?

There is a solenoid lock which works on the brake light circuit, if the brake lights are working it is possible the solenoid has packed up. Need to check it's operation.

Any slipping & your almost sure that
only a complete rebuild will be needed
to resolve burnt clutches

If you drove it like that your done

What could be the problem of not getting it out of park

Depending on what you had to do to get out of park, it could be the brake light switch or the solenoid that locks the shifter in park.
Those components would need to be checked.

2002 ford zx2 gt.... automatic transmission... will not go into gear.. starts, runs. you cant move the shifter from park.. the button on side shifter goes in a little more than half way.

You may want to check your brake light bulbs and fuse as it is what releases the parking pin.

sounds like your brake light pedal switch is out when it goes out it locks your car in park so that you know its out and needs to be replaced

There is a safety lock-out that keeps you from taking the car out of gear if you don't push the brake. If your brake lights still work then the switch is good. Also, some people have reported that if the high mount brake light is bad it will keep the car from being shifted out of park. If all of your brake lights work then the solenoid is bad. Remove the center console to get to the solenoid. Since the solenoid is expensive most people just zip-tie the solenoid open so that you don't have to push the brake to shift it from park.

My gearshift is stuck and will not shift

Check the fuse for the shift-lock mechanism. Also check the brake pedal sensor - do the tail lights come on when you press the pedal? If you need to get the car out of park, pop open the cover and press the shift-lock override button located near the base of the gearshift lever on the console.

My 2002 ZX2 Automatic's sifter doesn't want to shift out of park. Once I get it out of park it drives fine. Any suggestions?

The park lock-out solenoid is bad. It locks the shifter in park until you depress the brake pedal. You can remove the console and replace this solenoid or defeat it with a zip-tie.

Just check the fuse box for busted fuses. They are properly labelled as headlights, park lights, etc..
Also check the wirings for short circuited lines. Further-
more check the bulbs, if these are still ok.

Near the shifter, there is a small hole with a lil cover on it. Take the cover off and find something long, thin and sturdy to stick down there. There's a lil switch down there that can be pushed down that will allow the shifter to move. That should help for now. I still haven't found out what I need to do to fix this problem. Doesn't happen all the time, but it's truly annoying! Hope this helps!

Hmm are you parked up against anything, sometimes it will make the linkage bind up, make sure you are standing on the brake, and it will take quite a bit of force to pull it out of park if bound up
