During the winter time the engine may not produce enough heat to go half way. You can modify this by installing a hotter thermostat. But I would not go more that 20 degrees F though, or you could create issues for summer driving.

Testimonial: "Thanks....I thouht I had a faulty temp guage..as even inthe summer it stays below half...is there a way to test the guage"

Not really. There are two temperature sensors though. One for the guage and one for the computer. But they are both calibrated as follows: 1365 Ohms at 100 Degrees F., and 55 Ohms at 260 Degrees F. The guage is a pretty simple device. It's not likely the issue. If you are not getting heat then it is probably accurate. I know mine wont go over a quarter if I am on the highway. If I am in traffic it will. This is when the ambient temperature is abut 20 Deg. F. The one for the Guage goes in at the one side of the back head. The one for the computer is just below the thermostadt housing.

The temp should run right about in the middle of the gauge , might go either way a little during diff driving conditions. if its running cooler like mine was it could be the thermostat is stuck open. made mine run real cool unless car was just sitting there then would start running hot . there is a low temp sensor that should go off if engine continues to run at less then ideal temp, i would start there its a cheap fix and if its not your out 10.00 but you have a new thermostat so you dont have to replace down the road

providing your coolant is full cause low coolant will cause no heat
and your temp gauge is normal in the middle then most likely u have a bad blend door actuator usually on the passenger side

2004 Impala ls temperature dash gauge

fans came late on those car, like 212 and second fan comes on at 224,you reprogram it to come a lot sooner,,other thing is there might be gunk inside the block, and coolant has hard time to pass through, and staying longer than enough in block temp goes high, even tough the radiator is doing it's job,it is just coming out block lot hotter than it suppose to be,and gauge read the block not the radiator

Temp control on driver's side.

The diverter that controls where the air goes has come out of adjustment. Usually accessible under the dash . Linkage connects externally. A vacuum hose may have come off or is leaking, or the cable has slipped.

I have a 2004 Chev Impala and the temp guage went way past any numbers and wasn't hot. The speedo also stayed at 30 mph went the car is stopped. The speedo started working again when I shut it off and...

if you remove wire connection from temp sender unit and guage goes down then reconnect it goes up ? it is probably the temp sender unit is fault this is if you are certain engine/coolant system is ok and no indication of o/heating ?

Temp Sensor

The temp sensor known as the engine coolant temp. sensor tells the computer if the engine is overheating and so forth and tells the injectors how much fuel to give the engine. The temp. sending unit is what controls what your guage reads. It sounds like you need the temp. sending unit. It located near the thermostat housing with a single pole connector.
