Its not easy. It's behind the timing belt. If you follow the lower rad hose up to the engine, there's the plastic outlet housing that has to come off. you can see how burried it is.

John, check the spark plug wires for proper location, Timing belt may have been installed in not quite right position. Verify new belt installed correctly. Check the attached links,instruction and guides, Good luck

Heed of antifreeze coolant temperature!!! First time you might check the thermostat operating. The thermostat location for VW Passat 4Motion 1.9 TDI - AJM engine, is on back of the alternator at the bottom side of the bracket. IMPORTANT: It is NOT necessary to replace the alternator if you want to change the thermostat !!! Thermostat checking: 1. Cold engine. Start up the engine and watch of the water temp indicator. After first value 60 Celsius Degree you still warm up the engine until the lifter (pointer) reach 80 C deg. (second mark after 60 C deg.). At this time you let engine running at idle speed and check with your hand the thermostat plastic housing and hose temperature in bottom left side of the engine. Heed of alternator driving belt and ventilator fan !!! 2. If the thermostat is good the hose must be cold until the water temp indicator reach almost 90 C deg. 3. The thermostat opening temperature is 87 C deg. 4. If the hose is already warm the thermostat is out of order.

the passat uses coil packs one for each cylinder and the 2002 golf uses one coil pack that fires all cylinder and also not the same engine in 2002. now the 2000 vw golf with the 1.8 engine uses the same coils,so if its a 2000 vw golf with a 1.8 engine then yes you can use them they are exactly the same, hope this helps.
faulty temperature sensor locate it going into the block and replace its located on the block itself usually drivers side or in the front has 1 wire coming out from it ...as far as overheating is concerned does the fan relay kick in and possibly you need the thermostat changed or is there enough radiator coolant in the radiator .
